Nobody Likes Me
May 26, 2018
No one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life.
Psalm 142:4
As a child, when I felt lonely, rejected, or sorry for myself, my mother would sometimes attempt to cheer me up by singing a popular ditty: Nobody likes me, everybody hates me. I think Ill go eat worms. After a smile came from my downcast face, shed help me see the many special relationships and reasons for gratitude I truly did have.
When I read that David felt no one cared for him, that ditty rings in my ears. Yet Davids pain wasnt at all exaggerated. Where I had feelings of loneliness typical for my age, David actually had good reason to feel abandoned. He wrote these words in the dark depths of a cave where he hid from Saul, who pursued him with murderous plans (1 Samuel 22:1; 24:310). David had been anointed as Israels future king (16:13), had spent years in Sauls service, but now he lived on the move, always fearing for his life. In the midst of the loneliness David felt, he cried out to God as his refuge and portion in the land of the living (Psalm 142:5).
Like David, we can cry out to God when we feel alone, giving voice to our feelings in the safety of His love. God never minimizes our loneliness. He wants to be our companion in the dark caves of our lives. Even when we think no one cares for our life, God cares!
Lord, You are my friend when I feel alone. Thank You for being with me in the dark caves of life.
God is our friend in seasons of loneliness.
The heading to Psalm 142 says, A maskil of David. When he was in the cave. A prayer. But we might also call this song Davids cry. The poetic imagery woven into the lyric rings with authenticity because it flows out of Davids actual experiences. Twice he fled to a cave in fear for his life. Few of us can identify with that situation literally, but nearly all of us can relate to Davids metaphorical cave of loneliness and despair. When he uses words like cry (v. 1) and complaint (v. 2), we know how he feels. His spirit grows faint (v. 3), a snare has been set for him (v. 3), and no one is concerned (v. 4). David even sees his dilemma as my prison (v. 7). Yet he knows the trustworthiness of the One he cries out to, and he anticipates a day when the righteous will gather about [him] (v. 7). He will not always be desperately lonely.
Does an emotional cave imprison you today? Consider writing out your thoughts in raw honesty and giving them to God. How might that kind of honesty change your prayers?

Dad called this day “decoration day”.
There is too much traffic to go anywhere as everyone has adopted this weekend and the kickoff of summer.
Remember those that served and are no longer with us.

Happy Memorial Day?
Memorial Day is supposed to be a time to remember our war dead.
One of the local schools posted “Happy Memorial Day” on the message board in front of the schools. The local Veterans had a fit this morning, so the school principal changed it.

“Decoration Day” was so named because in many communities the women would decorate the graves of the fallen with flowers. Several towns in the US make claim for having started the tradition.
During my first couple years of grade school we had school in the morning for a patriotic program, then dismissal at lunchtime.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
JEROME KERN
SHOW BOAT
For her novel Show Boat, Edna Ferber had spent several weeks on the James Adams Floating Palace Theater in Bath (NC) gathering material about a disappearing American entertainment venue, the river showboat. In a few weeks, she gained a treasure trove of material: human, touching, true. Jerome was impressed by the novel and, hoping to adapt it as a musical, asked the critic Alexander Woollcott to introduce him to Ferber in October 1926. (Woollcott was later to become the model for The Man Who Came to Dinner.) Woollcott introduced them that evening during the intermission of Kerns latest musical, Criss Cross.
Ferber was shocked that anyone would want to adapt Show Boat as a musical. After being assured by Kern that he did not want to adapt it as the typical frivolous musical of the Twenties, she granted him and Oscar Hammerstein the rights to set her novel to music.
After composing most of the first act songs, Kern and Hammerstein auditioned their material for producer Florenz Ziegfeld, thinking that he was the person to create the elaborate production they felt necessary for Ferbers sprawling work. Ziegfeld was impressed and agreed to produce it, writing the next day, This is the best musical comedy I have ever been fortunate to get a hold of; I am thrilled to produce it, this show is the opportunity of my life. Show Boat, with its serious and dramatic nature, was considered an unusual choice for Ziegfeld, who was best known for revues. The story, which dealt with racism, marital strife and alcoholism, was unheard of in the escapist world of Broadway, populated by operettas, revues and musical comedy.
Theater historian John Kenrick: After the opening night audience filed out of the Ziegfeld Theater in near silence, Ziegfeld thought his worst fears had been confirmed. He was pleasantly surprised when the next morning brought ecstatic reviews and long lines at the box office. In fact, Show Boat proved to be the most lasting accomplishment of Ziegfelds career the only one of his shows that is regularly performed today.
It was without a doubt Kerns best score with his most memorable songs. Show Boat opened the door for musicals like Carousel and South Pacific decades later and for Gershwins Porgy and Bess. Broadway would never be the same.
MAKE BELIEVE
This is from the 1951 MGM version from the Arthur Freed unit. Keel is just the right mix of gentleman and cad in the role.
