President Donald Trump and his supporters are circulating an explosive theory: The FBI, they say, may have planted a mole, or "spy," inside the 2016 campaign to bring him down. The unverified allegation has lit up conservative media and earned space on Trump's Twitter feed just as special counsel Robert Mueller enters his second year in the Russia probe.
But where did the allegation come from?
Like many conspiracy theories, it appeared to grow out of a less sensational truth: U.S. surveillance on foreign officials - a common practice in the world of spycraft - likely picked up what's called "incidental" communications with Americans in Trump's orbit. That included former national security adviser Michael Flynn's discussions with Russia's ambassador to the U.S. during the presidential transition.
At issue now isn't a wiretap, but the identity of a top-secret FBI informant who allegedly helped investigators on the Russia probe. Trump and his lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, say they suspect the FBI planted someone inside the campaign as a setup.
This claim actually isn't new for Trump supporters either. But it seemed to find new life after news reports confirmed the existence of a confidential source in the Russia investigation. The conservative National Review suggested the puzzle pieces all point toward a mole, attracting Trump's attention.
"If so, this is bigger than Watergate!" Trump tweeted.
The FBI and Mueller have been extraordinarily tight-lipped about the investigation, providing few public clues on what sources they are relying on or where the probe is headed.
Mr. Trump and his lawyer, Giuliani, acknowledge they don't have the answers either. But that hasn't stopped them from floating the mole theory as a way of undercutting Mueller's work as an attempt by liberals to bring down the president.

That was his job! This no excuse to spy on the incoming president.
When I read this CBS “News” report, I get visions of a cat working carefully to cover a pile of feces with dried grass.
So..are they saying the New York Times is “fake news”??
Exactly. Turnabout is fair play!
“When I read this CBS News report, I get visions of a cat working carefully to cover a pile of feces with dried grass.”
Nice analogy!
Here is a notion “Journalists”.
Stop trying to spin the story as “Trumps theory” and simply report the facts that are being brought out about the spying on Trump’s campaign.
How about you report the facts and let your viewers/readers decide instead of trying to falsely represent this as “just Trump’s theory”?
This is a prime example Fake News of WHY you are failing.
It’s crazy. I literally thought that it must be a repost of an article from last year, just to show how wrong they were in retrospect. But no, it’s from today!
Full pre-splaining damage control mode.
Except that was no contacts, no “collusion with Russian agents” with the Trump campaign until the CIA - FBI put them there!
Clapper, he needs to be waterboarded.

“When I read this CBS News report, I get visions of a cat working carefully to cover a pile of feces with dried grass.”
I sense some backstroke going on here. Last week the planted spy was a given and we all were trying to guess who. Now we’re questioning if there was a spy?
The fbi and mueller s investigation have been tight lipped. Lol. Hahahahahaha. Funniest thing Ive read all month
No comments at the site. Figures.
President Donald Trump and his supporters are circulating an explosive “theory”?
A theory...
Well, there is former Director of Intelligence James Clapper, who said Thursday night on CNN that it was a good thing there was an FBI informant spying on the Trump campaign.
So yeah, See B.S. “news,” it’s kinda looking that way...

.
If a Russian spy was infiltrating the Trump campaign, shouldn’t the FBI have notified Trump, not attacked him.
I think it was the Wall St. Journal who started that “conspiracy theory,” CBS. Practically, a Never-Trumper news outlet.
See BS is the worst, and they didn’t disappoint.
MY theory is that British Intelligence incensed over Trump Brexit statements was approached by someone from the Obama Administration to plan a British intelligence agency operation on the Trump campaign and to help the Obama Deep State create a sting operation between the two deep state operatives.
To me the Australian High Commissioner (Ambassador) and Steele connection fits better this way.
