Former Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and underwent surgery on Monday to remove the tumor, his family announced.
Reid, who led the Senate Democratic Caucus for a dozen years until his retirement in early 2017, had the surgery at Johns Hopkins Cancer Center in Baltimore, and now plans to have chemotherapy treatments, according to the statement from his family on Monday.
His doctors caught the problem early during a routine screening and his surgeons are confident that the surgery was a success and that the prognosis for his recovery is good, the Reid family said. He is now out of surgery, in good spirits and resting with his family. He is grateful to his highly skilled team of doctors and to all who have sent and continue to send their love and support.
Reid, 78, has spent most of his time in retirement in Las Vegas and has traveled to Washington just a handful of times, according to a person familiar with his travels. He, along with former House speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio), serves as a co-chair of the MGM Resorts International Public Policy Institute at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, and he also is a fellow at the universitys law school.

His arrogance and despicable acts against Americans is unforgiving
I dont wish Harry ill or well. He is a despicable person, and I just dont care about whatever his future holds.
Sure,I’ll keep it classy. But I must let it be known that a friend of mine once told me that Dirty Harry hadn’t paid any taxes for ten years.
I had an acquaintance who had a Whipple done by convincing the surgeon she was in much better shape than she really was.
She was very delusional and was convinced she was cured and a one in a million survivor - her quality of life afterward was very poor and she never admitted the cancer had recurred until she was dying in a nursing home.
One of the most annoying things is surgeons saying to patients, “We got it all!”
Um, no. You can’t SEE it all.
Yeah, that burns my butt.
I wouldn’t wish cancer on my worst enemy.
He’s DEAD Jim!
Ummm, I didn’t.
Claimed my mom in 2 weeks!
I’m sorry. My sincere condolences to you.
Dingy Harry is getting the best health care your tax dollars can afford. Not the health care he stuck YOU with - the health care he and McCain voted for themselves.
I find it interesting that as soon as the info about Reid leaking his letter to Comey regarding Trump/Russia to the media, in direct opposition to Brennan’s request, he is suddenly diagnosed with a deadly disease, which removes any possibility of him being questioned or charged with any crimes, just like John McCain.
And if he lives most of the time in Las Vegas why would he have surgery and follow up treatment in Baltimore?
Hate to sound cynical but I just automatically doubt almost anything a Swamp Creature says these days...
Since it is known in my family, I have paid attention to pancreatic cancer survival through the years. When I was younger, people lasted a year or less after diagnosis. Now, with better medicine, they seem to be lasting up to two years. It is VERY rare for someone to last longer than that. He is toast.
My wife is a nurse. Pancreatic cancer is pretty much death. I’d like to stay at least as classy as Harry Reid did, so good riddance.
I hope that man makes a complete recovery. Harry Reid.
I can’t comment, trying to keep it classy.
It’s strange how some cancer types are more lethal than others.
Karma
I guy in my office was diagnosed and died in five weeks.
Ive heard its 1 in 5 that survive the first year and 1 in 20 or 5% surviving two years.
