The inspectors of the Central Investigation and Enforcement Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture prevented the smuggling of 5.5 tons of eggplant and zucchini vegetables from Gaza to Israel.
The suspect driver was taken for questioning, the truck was confiscated and the produce was transferred for destruction. ...

I’m baffled. Why not just let Palis sell their veggies in Israel and any other place they choose to? Exporting vegetables is not a terrorist endeavor.
There is no easy way to determine they were not poisoned.
According to suspicions, the truck driver intended to market the produce in Israel.

Jeez, ya think!
“So why destroy them if they were healthy, and why try to sell them if they were not? “
Government workers are like chess pieces. They can only do certain things. So, the vegies end up in the hands of a bureaucrat whose only authority is to confiscate and destroy. He has no other options and bureaucrats are not allowed to get creative. That would be cause for instant dismissal.
I would imagine that if he ended up with something that was not in the rule book, a live tiger cub, for example, he could get creative and send it to the local zoo. But, that’s about it for creativity.
Strange. If it was a matter of taxes, they could have sold the vegetables, deducted the taxes and expenses of seizure, and given what was left to the truck driver when he got out of jail. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Tis is not a matter involving simple importation of produce. Its a security matter. Even if the present attempt to smuggle vegetables from Gaza was legitimate, the producer/driver would soon be pressured or extorted by the Muslim Brotherhood to convert the truck into a drive-able bomb, or smuggle IEDs into Israel for use against innocent people.
This is not the fault of Israel, but the fault of the Muslim Brotherhood and of the criminal syndicate that calls itself representative of the Palestinians in Gaza, when in fact they are a terrorist organization which refuses to recognize Israel as a Nation.
I applaud the security that Israel has on its borders. I wish we had the same on our Southern border to combat the human slave trade and the barrage of smuggled drugs into our cities via the drug cartels.
A vegetable does not change the fact that the primary function of any border needs to be security.
Unless it’s disinfo
Any Israelis who want zucchini need only leave their unlocked vehicle in the parking lot of a midwestern Catholic Church on Sunday during Mass. Better than even chance a whole bag of zucchini will be waiting for them when they revisit the vehicle an hour later.
Sample. Labwork. Report. Easy enough.
In the alternative, give a piece to the truck driver and see what happens.
They get creative all the time. Just sell it, pocket the money, and have your fellow bureaucrat make certificate of destruction for half the proceeds.
I remember once I had a beautiful Japanese steel knife the size of my forearm in my luggage, and going into the central bus station in Jerusalem, they discovered it and confiscated it. But first I had to wait for a cop to come and then I had a choice, either consent to its destruction or go down to the police station and get grilled on why I had such a big knife. I argued and shmargued that it was in my luggage, that it was a wall decoration, that I had bigger knives in my kitchen, but those were the choices, so I consented to its destruction. As I was going through this nonsense, the x-ray machine workers were parading around with the sheathed knife, seeing how they looked with it. I went home. The knife is now decorating a bureaucrat’s wall, but officially it was destroyed.
LOL, if each eggplant weighed two pounds that would be over 5000 individual eggplants. What are they gonna do, stick a needle in each one?
You know what we say around here about bringing in huge amounts of military age muslims without figuring out a way to check them out...even if only 9% of them want to do us harm...it is like a jar of jellybeans to give to your kids, and only 9% of the individual jellybeans have cyanide in them!
There’s produce being exported and imported from Ghaza all the time. They have a three-star hotel in Ghaza, where all the journalists and NGO people stay. It might have been a nice place to live if Hamas wasn’t there. But the trucks are generally not used for bombs. Blowing yourself up is one thing. But destroying commerce so that everyone’s starving is something even Hamas wouldn’t dare do.
How times have changed...I spoke to my old Navy Buddy the other night, and he remarked that when he went home after being discharged back in the late seventies, he brought a .22 rifle and a 25 lb. practice bomb home with him on the plane in his luggage!
“The knife is now decorating a bureaucrats wall, but officially it was destroyed.”
That’s disturbing. I really hate tiny men with a little power. As Mark Twain said, “No power gets exercised more vociferously than small power.”
That ignores the normal QC procedures that all food industry businesses have to go through. You take random samples. You can’t check every one of anything. But a random sample will usually uncover any problems.
This is not “all the time” over there right now, there is a lot of unrest and open threats against Israel, especially with the official opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem over the weekend.
Damn straight. They were selling much more wicked-looking knives upstairs in a men’s store in the bus station. They were selling samurai swords, too. Stupid laws breed corruption. If I had known better, I would have just got on the bus at the string bridge down the road, and avoided the whole hassle.
