On a summer morning last year, Fred Schaub drove his Toyota RAV4 into the garage attached to his Florida home and went into the house with the wireless key fob, evidently believing the car was shut off. Twenty-nine hours later, he was found dead, overcome with carbon monoxide that flooded his home while he slept.
After 75 years of driving, my father thought that when he took the key with him when he left the car, the car would be off, said Mr. Schaubs son Doug.
Mr. Schaub is among more than two dozen people killed by carbon monoxide nationwide since 2006 after a keyless-ignition vehicle was inadvertently left running in a garage. Dozens of others have been injured, some left with brain damage.

Normal people with some wits about them press the big button that says ON/OFF. My 78 year old mom has no problem with this, nor does my wife.
Rav-4’s, like most keyless cars, give some warning beeps if you open the door with it running - if the guy had been driving for 75 years, he must have been around 90 and mental capacity due to age is suspect....tragic that someone didn’t stand up and tell him they would handle his transportation...no reason to not park such a car in a garage...let’s face it, if you can park a car and not realize it is running when you get out, it ain’t the car’s fault...
Imma bust on you for getting a V6 Charger.
I can absolutely tell when my 420HP Coyote is running in my Mustang.
:P
This happened in Boca back in 2009. Two 11-year-old girls were killed (I knew them).
The car was in the garage, and the keys were on the kitchen table.

I never understood how this could have happened till I read this article this morning on FR.
>>What type of idiot parks a car with a keyless ignition in a garage?<<
The same kind of idiot who parks a keyfull ignition car in the garage. Someone who doesn’t want to expose their new vehicle to the elements.
This is is on the designers of the car (and in fact the whole stupid keyless ignition thing). Not on the owners who think they have shut off a device and it continue to run.
So your key fob battery dies while you are doing 80 on the Washington beltway ...
I'm just sayin'...
I got out of a rental and came back next morning to find it warm and coxy, with a nearly empty gas tank.
Could not hear it idle. Had a good laugh, but hate keyless cars. Sometimes you have to cycle the sequence a couple of times to get them to shut down.
I’m 65, my wife is a bit older, we bought a 2017 RAV4 last year. If you open your door and get out while the car is still running, it starts a very audible beeping alarm. Having a keyless car does take some getting used to, but it doesn’t take long to establish a routine of pushing the big start/stop button. If someone is afraid of forgetting to push the stop button, they should set their headlights to automatically come on when the car is started, day or night. When you stop the vehicle, shut the engine off, and close the doors, the lights will stay on for only about a minute, just stand in the garage until the lights go off, and you’re sure that the engine is off.
Keyless cars are an optional extra. Those who are really concerned about their ability to remember that the car is still running, shouldn’t pay for the keyless option.
Keyless ignition is wonderful if you live in a cold climate and your car is parked outside. Start it up remotely from the comfort of your home a few minutes before you have to leave, drink a cup of coffee, then head off to work in a warm car with defrosted windows.
Millions of people.
I left my keys in the ignition the other day. It happens. I looked all over the place for the keys. Finally I said, I wonder if I left them in the car. I did. Never did that before but shit happens.
It's very convenient not to use a key.
Note to self - if ever get new car get keyed car, else used.
On some rentals, if you hit the button while your foot is on the brake it will not shut down. Or if you hit the button and then shift to park it will not shut down. You have to physically verify it obeyed before you exit.
STUPID DESIGN.
One of the conveniences I really enjoy.
Yeah. I always park in my living room... sheesh
“On some rentals, if you hit the button while your foot is on the brake it will not shut down. “
That way on all.
Won't affect anything. Your drive will continue as normal. You won't notice that battery is dead until you go to start your car up next time.
As a preventive measure, I have the battery replaced in my key fob every couple of years while I'm getting the car serviced. I believe they will last 3-4 years as a general rule.
A better question: What kind of idiot parks a car, ANY car, without making sure it is shut down? There have been enough vehicles in the last 40 years that have provided nasty surprises when left running unattended that you’d have to be a complete moron to not make sure your internal combustion vehicle has shut down before leaving the area.
