Israel has hit nearly all Iranian infrastructure in Syria, military claims

Israel has claimed it hit nearly all Iranian infrastructure in Syria during airstrikes launched in response to a rocket attack on its troops in the occupied Golan Heights it blamed on Iran.

The alleged Iranian barrage just after midnight, which Israel said failed to hit its targets, and extensive response appeared to be the most serious confrontation ever between two foes who have long warned of war.

It would be the first time, if confirmed, that Iran has fired rockets directly at Israeli forces in a conflict that for years has been fought through proxies such as the Lebanese group Hezbollah.

Israel’s response was the most significant strike in Syria since the 1973 Yom Kippur war

I suspect that any time Iran thinks they can win a war with Israel, they will start one.

The Iran deal stipulated that the US would come to Iran’s defence if attacked.

Laughable that Iran thinks they can play with Israel.

Iran is pathetically weak in Syria. And Russia dictates how much they can play.

It’s exactly why they hesitate to respond immediately.

Prepare for more fireworks tonight from the IDF.

They’re ally of the Alawaite Assad regime, which is an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Assad has been battling a Sunni Muslim Arab uprising for a number of years and Iranian support has helped to keep him in power.

I would think (admittedly not knowing the extent of yesterday’s action) that taking out Syria’s nuclear facility might be considered pretty significant.

The significance in Trumps announcement about Iran is that of all the countries he did not mention also included Lebanon.

Assad’s Syrian Arab Army is 60-70% sunni
The Syrian struggle is Assad secular regime vs sectarian extremism
( sunni)
It’s not a “ sunni uprising” unless you want to call ISIS and al Qaeda a “ sunni rebel movement”

Back in the olden days before Syria was pumping much oil, Iran gave oil to Hafez al Assad to resell to fund his Government.
In return Syria ( and gadfly Libya) bolstered Iran politically vs Saudi and Gulf states during OPEC meetings
Syria also cooperated with Iranians in confronting Western interests in Lebanon and vs Israel as occupier of Syrian Golan
It was Tehran that ordered the bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beirut- via Syrian logistical support
Then the Iranian regime developed new Revolutionary outreach goals to expand across the Med into the Balkans
Needed Syria to transit trainers and weapons to Bosnian muslims
( West stepped up their involvement to counter that)
