Several African American graduates at the University of Florida are speaking out after a white faculty member forcibly rushed them off stage at one of the school's commencement ceremonies on Saturday. The students said they were observing a long-held tradition among black fraternities and "strolling" after getting their college degrees when the usher grabbed them and roughly shoved them along.
University of Florida President W. Kent Fuchs apologized after videos of the incidents went viral online.

Going to my nephew’s graduation on Saturday. He’s graduating with an Electrical/ Computer Engineering dual degree from a school whose name ends in “IT”. Don’t think they’ll be much mugging, clowning and disrespecting going on at commencement. I could be proven wrong but I doubt it.
I also missed my graduation. I had a letter from the dean of the school of engineering and everything. It was the ultimate cut.
Time was a wastin..... My wife and I had to get married and start new jobs 400 miles apart in a very short time the first weeks of June and my graduation ceremony just didn’t have the priority.
I live in a culturally diverse community.
Ive had to tolerate this kind of crap a few times regarding my kids. At least my kids see how animals behave. They are not normal, they are not like us.
For the 5percent that are normal, must be pretty embarrassing
Oh, the quota system assured that the clowns will be there. Just you wait. And realize they were all admitted gratis
“Look at me, Im special! Why? Because Im BLACK!!!! “
Recall attending son’s at Gainesville....Largest group getting degrees was the “Communications Degree”....Watching/listening made it clear that the degree meant they finally learned to read and write.
Smallest group was the PhD recipients of which our son was one (Math)....Clapping yes, screaming NO !
“You go forward with your tradition, and we will proceed with ours.
Two thumbs up, a perfect response.
The students said they were observing a long-held tradition among black fraternities and "strolling" after getting their college degrees when the usher grabbed them and roughly shoved them along.
It's telling that these "graduates" don't know the difference between an usher and a professor in a doctoral gown.
The fruity celebration chest slapping and swishy dancing is a huge reason I can’t watch the NFL. The players can’t even police themselves, they had to come up with lame rules to slow it down some.
Freegards
My tribe in the south had traditions too
Lets bring them back, itd do wonders for manners for blacks and whites
After all they were traditions right
Only a top few should receive on stage. It should also be blank with the real one put in the mail. Dont follow proper decorum it might not come.
These are likely 23-24 years olds....my dad was a fighter pilot by then and my mom was on base toting me around as a toddler
They are not kids technically though admittedly now anyone under 35 is a kid to me
Another tradition is involuntary branding/tattooing.
Next time you watch a football game, including games involving UF grads (Emmitt Smith was one) you may see a nice big Omega or Sigma-shaped scar on the upper arm, placed there courtesy of a hot wire hanger.
We have universities throwing the book at fraternities and sororities for having harmless ‘Taco Tuesday’ or other themed events.
But black Greek system members have and continue to practice some of the most brutal hazing and rituals. It’s an open secret on many campuses and many grads/alumni speak about it years later.
Their punishment: none.
I said irony was thin on the ground but not in this instance. One might think a group so aggrieved about slavery ie being owned as chattel that they would oppose any and all attempts at being branded or marked.
Missed my graduation ceremony, too, as I actually graduated and got my Army commission in December. I was on active duty at the Field Artillery School and preparing to go to my first duty station in West Germany. I had what I wanted and didn’t need the ceremony.
On Friday, I’m going to be screaming right along with them.
I had to laugh reading your post...the older I get, the more the “young adults” look like kids to me too.
Your post is interesting, and bears on how things have changed.
I was looking at my Dad’s records, and he was a 19 year old ensign graduating from a V-12 program in 1945. In less than two years, he was the Post Commander for the local VFW (He was in the Naval Reserve) and when the Korean War came, he made the leap to the Regular Navy and was over in Korea.
How different from our lives were our father’s lives. Granted, I was still in the USN at 21, but man...my dad was off and running. Married my mom a couple of years later...
Really? You think so?
Many college graduates are illiterate, have no work ethic and have no idea how to behave in a civilized society. That's because these kids spent four years partying and downloading assigned papers from the internet. Exams? You've got to be kidding.
The degree no longer counts for much.
There were white graduates who did the same thing, and they were treated exactly the same.
