President Donald Trump's trade policies are confounding Republicans as rural voters his strongest supporters stand to get the short end of the stick just months away from the midterms.
From his dairy farm in southeastern Nebraska, lifelong Republican Ben Steffen believed Donald Trump meant what he said on the campaign trail about ripping up U.S. trade agreements.
So Steffen, who produces milk, beef, soybeans, corn and wheat, wasn't shocked when Trump pulled America out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership pact, began renegotiating NAFTA or announced his intent to impose aluminum and steel tariffs on China that have drawn the threat of retaliatory sanctions on American products. But he is alarmed about the potential costs of Trump's trade agenda to his own operation and the state's economy.
"This kind of chaotic volatility in our trading relationships damages the market," Steffen, who runs the farm with his wife, his sister and four full-time employees, said in a telephone interview with NBC News. "The market responds and the prices are erratic and thats destabilizing for people out here on the bottom end producing feed and food."
Now Steffen, who didn't vote for Trump, is a vocal supporter of Jane Raybould, the Democrat running an improbable campaign against first-term Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb. and says he's talked to a lot of fellow farmers and Republicans who have "buyer's remorse" about Trump and Fischer.

The globalist agenda is to deindustrialize the US under a global trade regime in which US industry moves to other countries with cheaper labor and less regulation, and the US becomes primarily an exporter of crops and raw materials.
Basically, our heartland would become primarily agricultural and pastoral. Globalists and progressives have long seen a strong US as the primary problem in the world. (Another part of the agenda is the transplantation of third world populations into the US.)
They are trying to get farm state Republicans on board with the agenda.
Is his name Archer Daniel Midland?
I have learned to actually hate the lying enemy-of-the-Republic bastards.
Whenever they start trotting out the "lifelong Republicans" rest assured they're certainly not conservative and likely aren't even Republican.
He probably would have if he hadn't had an uphill fight with turncoats in the "Republican" Congress.
Wonder why the big corporate farms want subsidies? So the big corporations and DC bums can “invest” in Ag and scam the rest of us out of money.
Only people who are UNhappy about the Trump agenda are open borders globalists pushing importing cheap labor.
Rush said on Thursday or Friday that the generic polling was even....dem “advantage” zero.
Not totally surprised by this. The one US industry that has pretty consistently benefited from trade over the past several decades is agriculture. No matter how much many other industries were hollowed out, most agriculture benefited from increased exports under all the poor trade agreements our government entered.
The US ag industries have a big advantage. No one can load up the most fertile soil in the US along with the climate and ship it to a cheap labor nation to be worked by $10 a day labor.
But they’d definitely move it if they could and ag would suffer the same fate as many US industries, a result that Trump is working hard to reverse. If the ag states prove to be the spoilers in Trump’s trade goals, much of the rest of the country will be justifiably upset.

Trump is doing what he promised. Yell at congress
Fake news.
Fake news, and/or over reacting melodrama.
There are no tariffs yet. So far just talk about fair and reciprocal trade. People need to calm down and wait until concrete measures have been named and in place.
So they’ve found a “Republican” who admits he didn’t vote for Trump and now wants to oust Senator Fischer so Chuck Schumer can become majority leader. It’s a “Republican” who doesn’t vote for Republicans of any stripe they are using as an example of how Republicans are fed up and want liberals in charge. Another false narrative.
Reminds me of all of the stories run of “Republican voters” in Ohio who were voting Democrat in 2004 to get rid of Bush - didn’t happen, or how “life long Republicans” were leaving the party in droves in Wisconsin over Scott Walker and the GOP legislature - then the GOP wins the recall contests, Scott Walker was re-elected, Senator Johnson wins, and then the state goes red in a Presidential election for the first time in 30 years. Obviously all of those “life long Republicans” were not leaving the party in droves the way the media portrayed.
How can Steffin have “buyers remorse” when he DID NOT VOTE for Trump? Lifelong republican my foot!!!
