With few coal plants left to shutter, transportation is the main hurdle to meeting emissions targets.
Liberal states carbon-cutting plans are stuck in traffic. Literally. Transportation emissions threaten to undercut blue states climate goals, raising questions about their ability to lead U.S. climate efforts at a time when the federal government is rolling back environmental regulations.
Emissions from cars, trucks and other mobile sources are on the rise nationally. In 2016, they overtook power plants as Americas largest source of greenhouse gases. But the situation is exacerbated in blue states, where power-sector emissions have plummeted and planet-warming tailpipe pollution remains stubbornly high.
Yet plans to tackle automobile emissions remain in their infancy outside California, which has implemented an economywide cap-and-trade program and a host of policies aimed at curbing carbon from cars and trucks. The policy innovation at the state level has largely been focused on power and not on comprehensive solutions, said John Larsen, an analyst at the Rhodium Group. Tackling emissions outside the power sector is required if states are going to continue to lead.
Even if California brushes Trump aside, the sheer size of the emissions reduction needed in the transportation sector is daunting. Transportation accounted for 39 percent of 440.4 million tons of greenhouse gases emitted in California during 2015. The power sector, by contrast, was 11 percent. We have the cleanest power sector we know how to make, and theres still a long way to go, said Wara, the Stanford researcher.

The real goal is to control, or at least limit, our freedom of movement.
I’m old enough to remember when Scientific American actually covered science.
Silly me.
All liberals should be forced to walk or bike as their only means of transportation.
This article is neither Scientific nor American.
Me too. Remember Popular Mechanics before they went PC?
Thanks for posting all of these Goebbels Warming articles.
There is a veritable firehouse of propaganda being aimed at the American people.
We’re still not buying it.
Decades ago, long before “climate change” became an issue, the Left’s Utopian goal was to force everyone onto public transportation and bicycles. So not much has changed in 50 years.
I remember articles and novels from the 60s and 70s showing pictures of “future” cities where everyone was happy to be walking, riding bicycles and taking subways and trains. Of course, the pictures showed a nice Spring day (no freezing cold or 100+ degree days) and the public transportation wasn’t overcrowded.
Tesla will save us! :-D
In the early 20th century, large cities were really, REALLY concerned about what to do with all the horse droppings going forward, as the population increased.
Meh...
I have one of the Makita 36 Volt chainsaws, uses 2 18V batteries. Press one button to start, runs 45 minutes on a charge and charges in 45 minutes or so. Still have my Stihl as the amount of energy in a 5 gallon can of gas is a lot more than batteries can hold for the same weight, but am going to upgrade the weed whacker and hedge trimmer to this system. Clean, quiet, reliable (brushless, which is nice in high fire hazard areas, too).
How can a state have a climate goal?
Anthropogenic Global Climate Whatever has always been a means to an end - centralizing power in the hands of the government.
I heard the federal subsidy for electric cars was being eliminated in the Trump tax bill. Does anyone here know if that actually happened? I haven’t seen anything about it since the bill passed.
Psssst.....Blue State......is dat your climate goal over there? Be a shame if sumpin happened to it. Id move it if I was you. - Carl The Car
You got that right. Want proof?
Everything you need to know about the climate change agenda was stated quite clearly by the UN's top climate official in 2015:
"This is probably the most difficult task we have ever given ourselves, which is to intentionally transform the economic development model, for the first time in human history.
"This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally, within a defined period of time to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the industrial revolution. That will not happen overnight and it will not happen at a single conference on climate change, be it COP 15, 21, 40 - you choose the number. It just does not occur like that. It is a process, because of the depth of the transformation."
--Christiane Figueres, Executive Secretary of UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change)
