Blasts were reported in Damascus, Syria, just minutes after President Trump announced that he would be launching an attack in retaliation for last week's chemical attack by Bashar al-Assad on his own citizens.
Unverified videos appear to show the attack as it happened, with Tomahawk missiles lighting up the sky over the Syrian capital.
President Trump said in a speech from the White House that he "ordered the United States Armed Forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. A combined operation with the armed forces of France and the United Kingdom is now underway."
The U.S. is conducting precision air strikes with B1 bombers, and at least two structures have been hit, according to reports, including a scientific research facility that may have been a site where chemical weapons are produced.
The AP reported: "Syrias capital has been rocked by loud explosions that lit up the sky with heavy smoke as U.S. President Donald Trump announced airstrikes in retaliation for the countrys alleged use of chemical weapons."
AP reporters in Damascus saw smoke rising from the east side of Damascus. "Syrian state TV says the attack has begun on the capital, though it wasnt immediately clear what was targeted," the AP wrote.
Reuters is reporting that, according to a witness, several explosions have been heard in Damascus, with smoke rising on the east side of the city.
Syrian state TV claims that Syrian forces launched a counterattack and that 13 Tomahawk missiles were shot down by Syrian forces, although that information has not been verified.

I haven’t campaigned for president, yet.
Ah, you just keep posting that nonsense to entertain yourself.
Free advice: Don’t.
hoping some one will explain the concepts of fraud and hypocrisy to you. Are you getting off watching the US bomb a country that we have no business being in?
The “realities” are always in the direction of more intervention, more.bombing, more war. So what you are saying is that candidate Hillary the neocon interventionist had better information. She was right about Assad? Is that what you are claiming?
Obama deliberately turned the Middle East into the mess it is today, including Libya. It was all done to help create a caliphate there and then destroy Israel as well as destabilize the USA at the same time.

Oh, so you’re just using fraud and hypocrisy.
I thought you were using some new form of logic.
I am using the presidential candidates own words. What the H are you using?
You are on the wrong website.
Yeah. I see his acts as meant to help China. But I seem to be the only one who sees China’s hand in all this.
Say, I was a HAWK guy myself. Not as big as yours but still cool missiles.
Yep. Noticed that.
Her show today was a hot mess. She’s had too many subs on her radio show. She seems obsessed with the plastic surgery, duck lips thing.
She should do one or the other, but she can’t do both radio and tv.
And, yeah, her and Ann can get a bit cray, cray.
Antigun activist nominee for the 9th Circuit.
First gun control since Bill Clinton.
Now, Neocon warmongering.
Trump is expecting me to get to the polls in 2018? Fat chance.
I’m with you man. This is the dumbest damn thing I’ve ever seen, it’s going to destroy his presidency and half the board is a bunch of mouth breathers yelling USA USA USA.
Disgusting!
Neocon nonsense bro.
The only sane, normal, people left in that wjole God forsakin place are being protected by Assad’s military. If they degrade, you will see beheadings, certifications, rape slaves all over again. This time courtesy of OUR guy!
Hilary Clinton wanted boots on the ground in Syria, to remove Assad from power, and thus truly risk a major war with Russia.
President Trump has neither desired, nor expressed, nor risked any such thing.
Pack your straw men back into their crates.
