US President Donald Trump has tweeted that Russia should "get ready" for missiles to be fired at its ally Syria, in response to an alleged chemical attack near Damascus on Saturday.
"Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'" Mr Trump said in his tweet.
Senior Russian figures have threatened to meet any US strikes with a response.
President Bashar al-Assad's government denies mounting a chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Douma.
In one his tweets on Wednesday, Mr Trump called the Syrian leader a "gas killing animal".
In another, he painted a dark picture of US-Russia relations but said it did not have to be that way.
The US, UK and France have agreed to work together and are believed to be preparing for a military strike in response to the alleged chemical attack at the weekend.

In other words: I will be launching missiles to counter this domestic, deep-state political maneuver, but please move your people out of the way, because I don’t want any to get killed which would raise tensions any more than necessary.
Smart move getting Britain and France involved too.
That will reduce any Russian response as well as media response.
Yes. launch missiles against Assad and give cover to ISIS and the Islamist backed rebels to regroup. Unreal.

Protecting a client leader, or by extension, protecting the Christian community or both?
We didn’t get an end to DACA.
Didn’t get the Wall.
But we did get some blowout omnibus spending bill and yet another pointless Middle Eastern war for the neocons based on a dubious gas attack!
14 months in, I’m somewhat disappointed in Trump. Actions simply not living up to the promises.
Not giving up on him, just disillusioned. And the last thing he needs is a disillusioned base in November.

Obama and Kerry wanted to bomb Syria five years ago, but Americans forced them to back down.
Trump will now do Obama’s dirty work for him. Just like the omnibus budget that Trump signed - it funds all of Obama’s wish list, with increases for inflation.

Don’t forget the “illegal” bump stock ban at the stroke of a pen. We got that too.
The two most likely possibilities, as I see it:
1. Trump has already worked this all out with Putin, and any air strikes will just be Kabuki theater.
2. Trump has succumbed to the lure of being a “war president.”
Sad that Trump is falling for this.
Well, I hope this is one of those cases where things aren’t as they seem.
