Rep. Bill Foster: Second Amendment meant to be reinterpreted by each generation
chicagotribune ^ | 4/3/2018 | Erin Hegarty

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster told a community forum audience Monday the Second Amendment should be up for reinterpretation as new generations come into power.

"It always has been up for reinterpretation," Foster, D-Naperville, said. "The technology changes, and the weapons thought to be too dangerous to be in private hands change. A civil war cannon is frankly much less dangerous than weapons we are allowed to carry on the streets in many of the states and cities in our country today. This is something where technology changes and public attitude changes and both are important in each of the generations."

The event was held less than two months after a shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school left 17 students and school employees dead and spurred student movements across the country to tighten gun restrictions.

Two area high school students, Rohan Chakrabarty and Jacob Baron, who helped lead walkouts at their schools in response to gun violence last month, helped answer audience questions.

"It's up to generations to interpret parts of the Constitution," said Rohan, a senior at Metea Valley High School. "We should continue to progress our views on something like the Second Amendment."

Jacob Baron, a senior at Naperville North High School, grew up in Newtown, Conn., where 26 students and staff members where killed in a school shooting in 2012.

"Planning escape routes, ideal places to hide — that's no way to go about my school day every single day," Jacob said.

"It's hard to not feel unsafe in school, especially with the culture of having lock-down drills every month."

"I firmly believe the student-led movement I've been able to take part in will instill a passion in my generation," he said.

the Second Amendment should be up for reinterpretation as new generations come into power. “It always has been up for reinterpretation,”

This is an elected Government official.
This is EXACTLY why the Founders made the 2nd Amendment the 2nd Amendment!

A moron that obviously never toured Gettysburg and listen to the Park Rangers speak on the Civil War!

I do not understand how anyone could vote for a person so lacking in logic and understanding of the Constitution and what it stands for.

There is no description anywhere in the Constitution describing a weapon or limiting either the number of or design of weapons men may own.

Flintlock? Barrel length? Concealed? How much powder in the horn?

Not in the Constitution.

Because the Constitution is not about weapons, It is bout human nature and specifically about the insatiable desire of men of certain character to rule their brethren to their own advantage.

The compulsion to rule others to one’s own benefit has existed since the earliest man and will always exist and is only controlled by the rule of law and those who respect the rule of law.

Our real rule of law, because it is our guide as to how to write and enforce lesser laws, is our Constitution.

Those who do not respect our Constitution should be impeached on the spot.

To democrats and RINOs there are no absolutes.

Where the Constitution says “SHALL NOT” they see “SHALL NOT UNLESS YOU WANT TO”.

As far as changing the Constitution or each generation reinterpreting parts of it there is a constitutional way to do exactly that.

But democrats and RINOs found that it is much too difficult and doesn’t always give them the results they want.

It is easier to just “discover” something new that is unwritten and between the lines.
Or to state that the words in the constitution don’t actually mean what they mean.

After all - they see themselves as much more knowledgeable than the Founders ever were.

The purpose of the 2nd amendment is to be a check against tyranny.
If you have the means to overthrow the government then the government serves you not you serving the government.
The right to keep and bear arms does not mention hunting.

Ol’ Bill Foster is just trying to establish his bona fides as a contender for the Maxine Waters Intellectual Achievement Award to be presented right after the Democrat/Leftist shellacking in the November mid-terms.

Those bastards wanting to change the Constitution need to be hung on the “yard arm”. Change one Amendment and they won't stop until the entire Constitution has been gutted. Better to keep the Constitution and get rid of the politicians.

The US Constitution is NOT a living document thus it stands AS WRITTEN. Those who say otherwise should never be allowed to hold public office.

What? I missed that in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. So, every generation we need to re-interpret the Bill of Rights? Let’s start with the 1st amendment first, okay? If we can agree to changes there, let’s save time and then apply them to the rest.

When it comes to Progs and Collectivists, the entire Constitution is up for grabs. Believe it.

To your point, DaveA37:

I am grateful, as are tens of millions of Americans, that Donald Trump is our President. My strong support for him is based primarily on his promise to preserve, protect and defend our Constitution … a promise which recognizes that defense of our Constitution is the President's primary responsibility – a responsibility above all others.

I keep hearing the “Mueller” investigation and relentless direct attacks on the President by the Leftists/Democrats (forgive the redundancy), supported by the inaction of Jeff Sessions, the illegal usurpation of power by Rod Rosenstein and the politicization of the once-trustworthy FBI, has created a “Constitutional crisis.” If this is so (and I believe it is) – that we are in a “Constitutional crisis” – then this means our Constitution is under attack by powerful internal enemies of the American republic.

So, Mr. President, as protection of the Constitution is your primary responsibility and you swore to do so, you must take prompt and decisive action. Waiting to see what our internal enemies will do next is not an option as it is clear they will do anything to bring you down, even if it means causing severe damage to the Executive Branch and to our Constitution.

What are you going to do about these direct attacks on our Republic, President Trump? If our Constitution falls, nothing else you do really matters.

I suspect the most accurate predictor of crime and homicide is the out-of-wedlock birth rate.
But that is ‘racist’ or something.

If you`ve been cooking in your kitchen for your family for 30 years, and someone comes into your kitchen and re-interprets how and what and how much you can cook, and wants to "reinterpret your cookbook", this Guy SOB POS Fostery deserves to be tarred and feathered and run outa town!!!

I already harangued all his offices and dared them to give this SOB POS the message from families who have had weapons since 1621 here. The Second Amendment is not a piece of paper up for "re-interpretation"- IT`s A Historical, living, alive, breathing practice by, for, and of the American citizens!!!

CONSERVATIVE TALKIES RESPONDING TO THE MEDIA’S WAR ON THE NRA, GUNS, AND THE 2ND AMENDMENT ONLY AIDS THEM IN CONCEALING THE POLICY FAILURES AS A NATIONAL ISSUE WHICH PERMITTED PARKLAND TO OCCUR
WAS PARKLAND AN IDYLLIC SCHOLASTIC SETTING OR A NIGHTMARE
Only an investigation will either dispel or prove that with those policies enforced. Students had all kinds of disciplinary problems (drugs, thefts fights etc) when attending classses there. Were scholastic standards lowered to fit fed DOJ grants ?
WHERE WAS THE DEMAND FOR FEDERAL AND STATE INVESTIGATIONS ????
It’ was not guns or the NRA It’s policies which had cops standing outside while killing was going on or some nut getting a gun the FBI knew he wasn’t suppose to... Plus a whole raft of other stuff
WAS THE DEMAND FOR STATE AND FED INVESTIGATION ON THE POLICIES WHICH CAUSED THIS NOT CONSIDERED BY FLORIDA POLS BECAUSE THE RESULT WOULD BE LAW SUITS AGAINST THE STATE ???
http://www.theusmat.com/index.htm

Had Governor Scott the courage of going out and exposing this which happened on his watch it would have shut down stuff like this.
