Umm, apparently he didn’t have enough money to purchase a meal ticket. Meals aren’t included in tuition.
You got that right being a gourmet meal! Mac 'n Cheese and Spam was a treat for me!

In addition to working, I collected cans and bottles for the nickel deposit so I had money to buy food.
This answer to this terrible crisis is, of course, for the government to double their loan loads.

When I became an E4 in the Navy, one of the first things I did was ditch my mess hall pass and take money instead to buy my own food.
I had to learn. I went weeks at a time eating Wonder bread with margarine from a tub, and drinking Lipton powdered iced tea.
LOL, I didn’t complain. It was my responsibility and choice.
My husband got through school in the UK by eating dog food quality ground beef.
He lived.
However, most of them have plenty to drink.
Not possible.
IRK! These kids are getting plenty of gummy bears and carmel machiattos (probably with soy milk).

I like fried spam... and also ‘spam salad’ ground up spam with Mayo and a dab of mustard, pickle relish and maybe some celery.
And I still love macaroni and cheese, and occasionally mix in some tuna for old times sake.
Breakfast: white bread and tea.
Lunch: Can of soup and crackers.
Dinner: potatoes, spaghetti or rice. Sometimes a can of veggies. Coffee.
Literally 1/3 of the food budget went to feeding my two cats and providing them with ltter.
