The worlds largest cruise ship was delivered to Royal Caribbean International on Friday by STX France at their Saint-Nazaire, France.
Symphony of the Seas, Royal Caribbeans fourth Oasis-class vessel, is 228,081 gross registered tons and measures 362 meters long by 66 meters wide and 70 meters high.
The vessel has capacity for 6,800 passengers and 2,000 crew in 2,759 staterooms.
By gross tonnage, the Symphony of the Seas takes the title as the largest cruise ship in the world, surpassing the 226,900 gt Harmony of the Seas, Royal Caribbeans third Oasis ship which was also built at STX France.
I crossed the Pacific six times 1951-1961 on MSTS ships.
Two weeks at sea each trip.
♫Love, exciting and new
Come Aboard. We're expecting you.
Love, life's sweetest reward.
Let it flow, it floats back to you.♫
With out stabilizers !!!
Yes, but. The US has a good number of shipyards. However, companies go to Europe to have their cruise ships built because it's cheaper. Not to mention that there are likely a CRAP TON of government regulations that they'd have to follow before they'd even allow the hull to touch water. That's going to add a lot of expenses to the final cost.
I can’t imagine a cruise like that. Too danged many people in one place. I’d jump overboard.
Goog god now i got that song stuck in my head again BTW we cruise princess a lot they play reruns of the love boat all day long
I had forgotten that Paul Williams wrote the Love Boat theme.
**height greater than the beam = capsize**
I don’t think that they install the engines/turbines/generators and fuel tanks above the waterline. The hull is the foundation that supports the rest, and has to withstand the pounding sea.
Just looking at the exterior size of a jetliner, one wonders how it can get off of the ground. But, even in the seemingly crowded passenger and crew cabins, I suppose air occupies 90% of the space. (ever seen those pics of where some teens managed to cram 20 bodies into a compact car?)
That was also my thought, Haji could get his 72 virgins plus.
Maybe I’m getting old and/or antisocial but I prefer the mid size ships with 1200 passengers. I don’t want crowds and noise constantly around me in a carnival like atmosphere. Besides, I’d think the size of this ship would limit the ports of call.
...that was an adventure.
Looking forward to cruising on it someday.
It looks like a container ship for humans...which is essentially what it is.
Our newest carriers are only 100,000 tons.
What is the advantage of being on a giant cattlecar hotel? Wouldn’t the experience be a lot better on a smaller ship? Maybe someone who has taken a cruise can tell us landlubbers.

the hotel can book groups that then pretend they went somewhere
#9 That will not happen if captained by a Italian captain!
A trip on that ship does not look like fun to me.
My favorite times — aside from our family’s own sailing experiences, has been on overnight ferries, or the river boats in China. On both, you are in close contact with what is around you. I don’t need inside entertainment, or being with that many people. I like a deck where you can see the sea life close up.
We do. But mostly ships covered by the Jones Act that says
cargo or passengers carried between US ports must be on American built and American crewed ships. So there is one US Flag ship cruising the Hawaiian Island.
Years ago I worked as an Able-Bodied Seaman and Third Officer on the USS Independence which cruised the Hawaiian Islands with its sister ship, the Constitution. Both were built in the 1950’s in the US. They carried about 750 passengers.
Indeed. And if they do the Caribbean tour, just imagine the impact of those thousands landing on some small island all at once.
