President Trump on Friday announced that the Department of Justice would issue a new rule banning bump stocks.
In a tweet, Trump announced that he was directing DOJ to reverse a 2010 decision by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive (ATF) that classified bump stocks as firearm parts so the devices could be banned under current laws that prohibit owning fully automatic weapons.
Trump blamed the legalization of bump stocks on the Obama administration.
"Obama Administration legalized bump stocks. BAD IDEA. As I promised, today the Department of Justice will issue the rule banning BUMP STOCKS with a mandated comment period. We will BAN all devices that turn legal weapons into illegal machine guns," Trump tweeted.
The decision Friday follows a letter sent by GOP senators in October urging the administration to review the decision after a mass shooter used the device in killing 58 people at a country music concert in Las Vegas.
Bump stocks are used to modify semi-automatic weapons so they mimic automatic counterparts.
"Unfortunately, we are all now keenly aware of how this device operates and believe that this renewed review and determination will keep our citizens safe and ensure that federal law is enforced," the nine Republicans wrote last year.
Fully automatic weapons have been banned in the U.S. since 1986, but bump stocks were described by the ATF in 2010 as "a firearm part and is not regulated as a firearm under the Gun Control Act or the National Firearms Act.
would you rather have a liberal Trump or conservative Trump? Or would you rather just insult patriots that recognize a cr@p sandwich when they see one?
If there were a buildup, it should not be public knowledge.
I wasnt being funny; every statement is true. Laughable, but true. My friends and sons friends have been and continue to die overseas without reason or recourse. Our military leadership is corrupted because of immoral alliances with countries that hold our values in contempt. We need to cease all the proxy wars and dismantle the combatant command structure that encourages unending international meddling. There is a happy median between fortress America and Empire Americanus.
Americas warriors should use American productsand they should be used in support of Americas interests.
Yep.
Hooah
I never said this was a good deal. Nor do I have the power to select what actions or characteristics someone else takes.
What I do have a choice or power on I take those actions the best I can. As I am sure President Trump is trying to do. I trust he is at least trying to do his best to stabilize us and make us productive, safe, and prosperous.
That is something I can honestly say very few in power right now do, try, or have any desire at all to do. So I would rather have HIM, than anyone else in that position right now. He has been the best one to fill that office for many years now.
As trumps favorite story goes you knew he was a scorpion when you elected him. Some of us knew he was no conservative. Too bad the choice was Hilary or the other democrat. Thats what voting for the shiny object in the primaries gets you.
P.S.
Please understand too, I am very against ANY infringement on our 2A rights. When I say ANY, I mean ANY.
I believe the 2A says what is says and doesn’t say what it doesn’t say. Same like the whole of our U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. Just like A. Scalia said.
I do NOT support anyone placing restrictions of any kind. Including the farce argument of ‘common sense restrictions’. That is INFRINGMENT.
If someone is too dangerous to be around guns then they are too dangerous to be around sharp objects. And should be treated accordingly.
I have to say I agree with everything you said.
They left rationality in the rearview mirror decades ago.
Agree. Many of his followers cannot stand to look at his biography and his actions; they would rather attack those who uphold the real and time-proven conservative values than come to grips with phony conservative and putin-lovin’ guy, trump.
Today is what you get when a president doesn’t actually have a political philosophy.
I agree and I would like to encourage him to stay in office by not selling out to the Dems. It is disingenuous to say that people that are angry about this sell out should be happy he is not Hillary. We want this president to succeed above all else in politics but he won't if he lets these crooks run over the base and they just did.
All that needs to happen now is for him to listen to these Soros funded commie kids and start talking about Assault Rifle bans.
As I recall I tried to convince Ryan district voters to vote for the democrat, they cried out I would never vote for a democrat, so they elected a democrat in disguise.
“We will BAN all devices that turn legal weapons into illegal machine guns,” Trump tweeted.”
“No chess in that statement - just pure unadulterated ignorance regarding how firearms work.”
Until now I haven’t cared much about bump stocks. A friend of mine had an “actuator” (a little trigger crank device) he attached to his AR-15. It was, I figured, similar to what a bump stock must be, that is using a “device” to pull the trigger faster than you can with just your finger, thus avoiding the laws on “automatic weapons.
SORT of... I just watched a video (non political) about bump stocks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2IOZ-5Nk5k
A good video even if you are not that familiar with guns.
After watching this video, I am convinced that adding a bump stock to an AR-15 turns that AR-15 into a fully automatic fire weapon.
It is a “too cute by half” way of getting around the law.
It won’t be for long.
Yes, they should be illegal! If you think that automatic weapons should be illegal, then you should have no problem making bump stocks illegal.
I know, camel’s noses and tents, but we DO have gun laws, and some are good.
I see 2 choices here.
1. Make automatic weapons legal
or
2. Make bump stocks (and any other like devices) illegal.
Make no mistake, an AR-15 with a “bump stock” makes it an automatic fire weapon.
Watch the video and tell me it isn’t!
(actually don’t tell me, I never read any responses to my posts)
“Fully automatic weapons have been banned in the U.S. since 1986, but bump stocks were described by the ATF in 2010 as “a firearm part and is not regulated as a firearm under the Gun Control Act or the National Firearms Act.”
A “technicality” in the law!
The “spirit” of the law was to ban “automatic fire” weapons.
Laws have to be “written”, courts have to interpret.
Clearly, bump stocks , are a way to circumvent the law.
Bump stocks should be made illegal. Like every other law, only by enforcement will anything change.
Also, like with other illegal items, anyone who really wants one will get one. Criminals won’t care that owning a bump stock is illegal, they are ALREADY CRIMINALS!
Laws don’t STOP anything. Enforcement doesn’t STOP everything.
The best we can hope for is a reduced number of illegal items out there and a reduced number of people possessing them. Unfortunately, the largest proportion of the reductions will be by normally law abiding citizens.
I have to agree with you that anyone instead of Ryan, even a Dem, would have been better in that WI election. At least we wouldn’t have this imposter I want to smack down every time I see him. Lying-Ryan. Is RottenStinkingSlimyLyingRyan a tad too long of a name?
Okay. In that case, I still don't think bump-stocks should be illegal.
I think they are stupid and that they turn an accurate, quick firing weapon into a spray and pray disaster - but I still don't think they should be illegal.
Also, the fact remains that a bump-stock simply does not make a semi-automatic weapon fully-automatic. Fully automatic is defined as firing more than one round with a single pull of the trigger. Bump stocks do not provide that function.
PS - Do not tell me whether or not to respond to you. Your arrogance, condescension and narcissism are your problems, not mine. I responded because you made a ridiculous claim which needed to be refuted.
