Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden ripped Facebook in a tweet Saturday after the social media giant suspended Cambridge Analytica, a data analytics firm which worked worked for President Trumps campaign.
Facebook accused the firm on Friday of not deleting data it had improperly harvested from Facebook users, which number in the tens of millions, but Snowden pinned the blame squarely on Facebook and lumped in other social media companies for being just as reckless.
"Businesses that make money by collecting and selling detailed records of private lives were once plainly described as 'surveillance companies,'" Snowden said. "Their rebranding as 'social media' is the most successful deception since the Department of War became the Department of Defense."
"Facebook makes their money by exploiting and selling intimate details about the private lives of millions, far beyond the scant details you voluntarily post," Snowden said earlier in the day. "They are not victims. They are accomplices."
Cambridge Analytica on Saturday denied any wrongdoing, issuing a statement that said the firm "fully complies" with Facebook's terms of service,
The ensuing uproar has prompted at least one lawmaker, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., to call on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, reportedly asked Cambridge Analytica last fall to surrender emails from any of its employees who worked for the Trump campaign. The firm complied to the request.
Facebook has already taken heat for spreading "fake news" during the election and promised changes.
Last year Facebook handed Mueller its findings regarding Russian Facebook ads, revealed when the company announced $100,000 was purchased for ads from June 2015 to May 2017 by a Russian "troll farm" called the Internet Research Agency, which has promoted pro-Russian propaganda. The money was connected to approximately 3,000 ads and 470 "inauthentic accounts and pages."
Mueller later indicted 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities for meddling in the 2016 presidential election, those who were part of the Internet Research Agency.
Snowden was granted asylum in Russia back in 2013 after he leaked secret information from the National Security Agency's surveillance programs and has been there ever since.
And the host here and on nearly every major website in the world makes it easy for them.
Every page here runs a google-analytics Java'spy bot'... a 'freebie' given to website designers to give them free statistical analysis of their visitors.... But if you allow it to run on your browser, it tracks your every mouse move, your every keyboard stroke, how long you spent on the page, etc. And that information is just for the webmaster, but sold to anyone with the money and interest to rent the info from Google. And, I assume, given to the NSA- CIA-FBI.
At least at FR, you don't HAVE to allow the spy-bot to run. More and more websites are not allowing you to see anything but a blank page unless you let the google crap run.
I recently ended a ~30 year $2,000 to $10,000 a year relationship with a firearms related business (Midway) because they are one of those who will now show you nothing but a blank page unless you let several Google 'Bots' run.
And google analytics is only a small part of the potential google spy stuff... I have seen websites that have more than fifty google java apps /scripts run on every page.
Firefox (and some clone browsers) users can install the 'No-Script' add-on and somewhat protect themselves.
How can you tell what is running?
(I think I read that the newest versions of firefox do not allow NoScript to work, which is why I haven't updated from FF 51.00.01)
If you use the Brave browser, click on the little orange lion face in the upper right corner, disable scripts, ads, cookies etc, and it will tell you what it has blocked.
I have no idea of what you can do with other browsers to protect yourself.

"And that information is just for the webmaster....",
Should read:
And that information is NOT just for the webmaster,
Yes, I have somebody who pestered me over LinkedIn too. Like you, I ignored all of it.
His claim was that it “made me real” - puhleeze.
LOL - good one and definitely not too far off
Thanks!
Yep - Well, the folks I worked with were highly-educated, and completely clueless about some things of the world.
It was a liberal bubble a lot of them lived in.
Yes he will.
Remember Valerie Jarrett and Barack Obama’s “database” comment?
She said there’d be Hell to pay.
Hrrrmpff. She ain’t seen nothing yet.
My guess is she won’t change and then she’ll find out the irony of her statement.
Hey, Valerie Jarret - John 3:17-18 King James Version, Bible.
Zuckerberg is the “face” of Facebook. It is owned and operated by the government. Actually a brilliant idea. People wouldn’t go on a government website and volunteer all kinds of personal info. But If it’s social media....
I was called a *stupid POS”, on Facebook, several years ago when I said I believed Facebook was the government spying on people.
Yes.. I clicked on Your Link!
Did That action create a ripple
In the Deep State?
No Doubt!
yep...what’s there’s is there’s what’s mine is there’s!
Maxine Waters: Obama Has Put In Place Secret Database With Everything On Everyone (Video)
Jim Hoft Jun 9th, 2013 12:37 pm
We were warned
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) told Roland Martin in a February interview,
Obama has put in place the kind of database will have everything on every individual.”
Before Its News has the transcript:
The President has put in place an organization with the kind of database that no one has ever seen before in life, Representative Maxine Waters told Roland Martin on Monday.
Thats going to be very, very powerful, Waters said. That database will have information about everything on every individual on ways that its never been done before and whoever runs for President on the Democratic ticket has to deal with that. Theyre going to go down with that database and the concerns of those people because they cant get around it. And hes [President Obama] been very smart. Its very powerful what hes leaving in place.
As it has been said by analysts, both Google and Facebook make much more money than their business model would permit.
They are taking home money from governments who want the information on citizens in nice packets. All ready to use.
