Perhaps neither of them did ANYTHING, but the continual pressure of this witch hunt against his father, and the threats due to his father being POTUS, were just too much for her to bear....or for her children to bear. Or you could read the story: “The problems have been there for a long time, the couple had hoped to stay together during the president’s time in office, but it is getting harder to resolve their issues. He’s never there.”

She does not have to testify about anything that occurred during their marriage and/or their life together.
AND, just because you're married, it doesn't mean you CAN'T testify against your spouse. You just cannot be compelled to do so.

This is what is difficult for me to understand.
Trying to envision if I were Vanessa, and hate and bile were directed at me. Why would I leave the man I loved? Even if I thought it might lesson the hate attacks, it wouldn’t be worth separating from my husband and removing him from my house. The toll that would take on me would be even worse. And then there’s the damage divorce would do to my children. All in an attempt to lessen the hate? I guess I’m not smart enough to understand that move.
