MIAMI (CBSMiami) Florida International Universitys massive new pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon in West Miami-Dade.
The bridge, located at 109th Ave and 8th Street, collapsed on a number of cars.
There are reports of numerous people injured in the collapse. At least one person was taken as a trauma alert to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
The 950-ton bridge went up on Saturday. It was then lowered into its final position, just west of 109th Avenue that day.
The main span was built next to Southwest 8th Street.
...it’s the media..no common sense
On FNC, Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R from the district, confirms some form of testing on the bridge was underway. While traffic was permitted to pass underneath.
Only Spanish people will be informed.
Looks like a fancy long span truss...there were what seem to be intermediate supports in this photo published by FIU four days age in a PR release.
Wonder where the initial point of failure occurred. Since that deck/truss span was prefabricated and swung into place it was capable of holding itself together while lifted...unless damage happened during hoist an drop. Somebody inspected that placement and signed off on it.
They did say that a “stress test” was taking place when it collapsed.
...now he’ll be blamed...
This is supposed to be a suspension bridge. The cables weren’t installed yet. Another poster said a crane dropped something on the span that caused it to collapse.
I’d heard reports. This was the first one I’ve seen sourced.
Oh, really ...
You called it. At the very least, no traffic should be allowed until after suspension supports are in place and tested. Someone should go to jail for this! Allowing traffic to sit under an incomplete span? Criminal!
Shep Smith interviewed the guy for a few minutes. He said it was “a piece of equipment” that fell from a crane. The guy also had several photos he’d taken that were showed on Fox, but they’d have to be studied in detail to determine it the revealed anything.
Still the early stages with very little confirmed.
And I keep wondering about surveillance cameras.
It was IKEA
Oh, dear. If you forgot rebar, just dissolve the company and turn yourself in to the police now.
Listen to the dumbass media.....
Official: We will NOeport on any injured or deaths at this time”
Reporter: “How many injured or dead?>”
Official: “We will NOT be reporting on this at this time.”
Reporter: “So how many injured and dead at this point?”
Good GAWD these people dont have the IQ of a common earthworm!
...this almost sounds like they were all in a hurry for the big unveiling that took place last Saturday...speech after speech....we’ll have to wait a year before we know what happen
Media guy suggests “6 to 10”.
No confirmation.
2.5 factor means you calculate the strength needed based on the materials then multiply by 2.5 for a safety factor.
A witness on FNC seems to be saying at least a couple of construction workers have been injured...
This whole thing is starting to stink to high heavens.
This guy is DISHING!!!!
Perhaps, but it clearly wasn't built to withstand one.
