I saw what appeared to be some rebar in one of the more close-up pictures on this thread.

Imagine this during a class change with 75 people inside of it. It would have had the proper suspensions in place by they time they allowed folks to walk across it. It wasn't finished yet.

I tire of these “press conferences” that do nothing much more than praise everyone involved in an active situation. I say get away fro the cameras and concentrate on the rescue efforts! They can kiss each others arses after the scene is under control
(I shall now step off my soap box)

I don’t have a lot of confidence that once it was “finished” that it would have been safe.

That would be an interesting turn of events. I'm trying to imagine what a crane could drop that would be heavy enough to cause a bridge collapse.
This bridge was designed to withstand the stress of a Category 5 hurricane.

I saw what appeared to be some rebar in one of the more close-up pictures on this thread. As Romulus put it, "That is probably not rebar, but the ends of post tensioning steel."

I dont have a lot of confidence that once it was finished that it would have been safe. With the proper suspension in place, it probably would have been. Unfortunately, they built it in the wrong order.

It may as well be over.
They couldn’t have TWO press confs?
To: Alberta's Child
Usually you build the supporting elements (the suspension tower, in this case) FIRST.I followed the construction of the new Tilikum Crossing bridge in Portland, OR. They did exactly that with the tower first and then cables put in place as each section advanced toward the center. At completion the cables received final tensioning.

.. was especially impressed with the fire dept. guy and his (unblemished) helmet on, him being 1/4 mile from the scene and all !
