A controversy is brewing at a coffee shop in Oakland, where police officer are not welcome.
The business, called Hasta Muerte Coffee, will not serve officers in uniform and turned away an officer a few weeks ago. The shop is an employee-owned co-op.
Workers at Hasta Muerte did not respond to requests for comment on the policy to refuse service to police officers.
But on the shops Instagram account, there's a photo posted with text that reads in Spanish: "Talk to your neighbors, not the police." The post continues about an exchange with a uniformed police officer on Feb. 16, and very clearly it states: "We have a policy of asking police to leave for the physical and emotional safety of our customers and ourselves."
The Oakland Police Officers Association sent the shop a letter, asking to open a dialogue about its policy.
The sergeant who was turned away from the shop a few weeks ago said he was surprised but walked out without incident and without any coffee. He said hes looking forward to talking with the shop owners to build a better relationship with them and the rest of the community.
Hasta Muerte, which means "until death," in Spanish, is located in Oakland's Fruitvale district.
MANAGER: “We don’t serve police officers here.”
OFFICER: “Good, I don’t eat them.”
Does that mean Quick Death?
“Hasta Muerte” means ‘speedy death’.
Buy one cup of black coffee, then throw it on this scribble of a propaganda poster.
Buncha nutjobs.
CC
Need to hire some out of work actors in police-looking uniforms to sit outside with a video camera all day just to jack with the owner and drive off business.
Speedy Death to Illegals? Who are these coffee people? Do they not know what their sign says???? Are they just typical White Democrats who googled some words and created the picture??I just don’t understand ignorant White Democrats
Lawrence is an a**hole.
Cops in NYC have been able to shut down diners that diss the police.
It would be a crying shame if bad fortune came to this business or any of its employees.
Do they employ their own private security?

If I opened a coffee shop and I refused service to Mexicans, could I get away with just a letter to talk about it?
Wait — it’s illegal for a cake baker NOT to bake a cake for gays, but it is legal for a shop to refuse to serve cake to
law enforcement?
Either business owners CAN select whom they will serve, or not; or else it is NOT legal for businesses to select whom they will serve (ie, they have to serve “the public”).
If I were a cop, I would not want to consume anything that place sells.
There’s another thread on this already, linking to the San Jose Murky News
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY! Where are all the LGBTQ activists and their outrage at this blatant act of discrimination?? Where are all the lawyers and ACLU cry babies? This poor (as in underpaid) gay, trans, white latino, Police Officer was refused service! I’m outraged!
Put 2 ICE officers outstanding de the shop. He’ll be out of business in a month.
Cops should stay as far away as possible from that place...especially if they call for help.
“May they, ahem, cough, wheez, never be robbed!”
Is Lawrence the Police Chief of Oakland?. Anyway the Mayor of Oakland has already set the tone by disrespecting the Federal Authorities. it does not surprise me that this can happen with a Mayor who probably encourages this type of behavior if not actively endorsing it.
