President Trump stunned Democrats and Republicans alike on Wednesday by pushing for gun-control measures that have long been poison pills for the GOP and pipe dreams for their opponents.
The president, during a televised, hourlong sitdown at the White House with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, appeared to back a bill proposed in 2013 by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania that would expand background checks for weapons purchases.
The bill written in response to the 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Conn. failed in the Senate due to intense Republican opposition.
But Trump called it a good starting point and even questioned whether other ideas championed by Democrats, such as an assault-weapons ban and raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21, could be included in one bill everyone could agree on.
Fellas, if you can all get together and we can get one great piece of legislation people want to see something happen. It would be so beautiful to have one bill that everyone could support, Trump said as California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein sat with a stunned smile on her face.
I think its time that a president stepped up. Im talking Democrat and Republican presidents, theyve not stepped up, Trump said.
Trump also shot down the GOPs proposed Conceal Carry Reciprocity Act, which would allow people with permits to carry guns across state lines.

False title, not reflective of reality, sorry.
How about betraying his oath of office? He is to defend the Constitution, not eviscerate it in the pursuit of fake “for the children” quests.
Yet those of us that saw this coming were pilloried and soft or outright banned from this site for saying so. We lost our chance to elect a real conservative for once in favor of this.....
Yep!!!
Nope, my undies are not in a twist. I take him at face value. Perhaps you have intimate knowledge of him, and thus know his innermost feelings.
There are some on FR who come down like a ton of bricks on those of us who express some alarm, and they say “Don’t pay attention to what he says, just pay attention to what he does.”
Well, paying attention to what he says got him elected. We believed his words. If we were not supposed to pay attention to that, and believe him, we’d have that banshee Clinton in office today.
3-D mess
He said it, and more than once.
We still have DACA with no end in sight and are nowhere on the wall. Thats how it went....
I’ve lived long enough, have had enough bad luck in life, to never allow myself to go all in thinking totally positive on anything. I’ve been super happy along with most everyone else here over getting POTUS elected but that tiny little voice kept going at back of my mind to be open to some surprising disappointment. As it always comes. Wonderful days are followed by crappy ones. Good years by bad. It’s the way of life. I’ll remain hopeful until and unless hope is fully dashed but I won’t be too surprised by whatever life dishes out.
Now I know I need to go to bed, rambling starting lol
There is no surer way to lose part of his base without winning over anyone else.
The Democrats are a very, very difficult fish to bait. No matter how flashy the lure, they won’t even turn their heads. How can the president sting and embarrass them if they won’t even take the bait?
He's been doing it for years and he's very good at it.
He actually had Feinstein eating out of the palm of his hand. (She was seated beside him for a reason.) He was holding out a glimmer of hope to the contestant but will pull it back before it can be seized. Feinstein's dream will never pass through Congress. Trump should get a bill though, one that will make the 1/3 of voters who are independents happy and won't annoy the 1/3 who are Republicans too much.
She looked like she was about to climax. This really has me on edge along with the move by Wally World and the other virtue signalers taking away the civil rights of 18-20 year olds.
I’ll be interested to see how stunned he is when he gets removed from office.
What did he say that “stuns and jeopardizes his base”? Point me to the time stamp so I can see it in context;

Dear Donald: Be careful! Upset your Second Amendment folks and we search for a new candidate.
What did he say 2 and 3? Point me to the time stamps so I can see them in context;

Trump is not going to sell us out.
I agree with your post. I have just gotten through watching the first 30 minutes of the round table discussion and havent the feeling of impending doom others have expressed concerning the presidents view on NRA/gun control, etc.
A few questions and observations from viewing the first 30 minutes:
1. The president mentioned one needed to be 21 to purchase a handgun. Is that true? If so is that true for all states?
2. The president said he met with NRA opponents for lunch on Sunday. Is there a synopsis or transcript of that meeting? Is it true the NRA supports Fix NICS (or parts of it)?
3. Ive only watched the first 30 minutes so far but I didnt hear the president use the term petrified concerning the NRA. Scared, yes, and maybe that is a distinction without a difference, however, petrified sounds more ominous. It could be petrified was used in the last 30 minutes of the discussion (will be watching later).
4. I got the impression that the president was interested in hearing from all participants whether he agreed with their views or not. Kept saying he was a strong supporter of the NRA and 2A. He also brought up several times his concern for the safety of schools and having armed teachers/people to deter shooters.
If you havent watched the round table you can catch it here:

And just this morning the president tweeted this:
Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump · 2h
Many ideas, some good & some not so good, emerged from our bipartisan meeting on school safety yesterday at the White House. Background Checks a big part of conversation. Gun free zones are proven targets of killers. After many years, a Bill should emerge. Respect 2nd Amendment!
I think he is playing mind games with the libs again.
