Trump stuns GOP, Dems with impassioned push for gun control

President Trump stunned Democrats and Republicans alike on Wednesday by pushing for gun-control measures that have long been poison pills for the GOP and pipe dreams for their opponents.

The president, during a televised, hourlong sitdown at the White House with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, appeared to back a bill proposed in 2013 by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania that would expand background checks for weapons purchases.

The bill — written in response to the 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Conn. — failed in the Senate due to intense Republican opposition.

But Trump called it a good starting point and even questioned whether other ideas championed by Democrats, such as an assault-weapons ban and raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21, could be included in one bill everyone could agree on.

“Fellas, if you can all get together and we can get one great piece of legislation — people want to see something happen. It would be so beautiful to have one bill that everyone could support,” Trump said as California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein sat with a stunned smile on her face.

“I think it’s time that a president stepped up. I’m talking Democrat and Republican presidents, they’ve not stepped up,” Trump said.

Trump also shot down the GOP’s proposed Conceal Carry Reciprocity Act, which would allow people with permits to carry guns across state lines.

Okay.

22:56 to Toomey: “You’re afraid of the NRA!”

34:40 - 35:00: Scalise was talking about CCW reciprocity being in the bill, and Trump cut him off. Scalise asked that it not just be dismissed, but Trump would have none of that, saying CCW reciprocity should not be included in the bill. That took away a very good negotiation argument before there is even any debate. It’s all well and good that it can come back as a stand-alone bill, but we needed it as a negotiating point.

41:30 - 41.32 to the room: “Some of you people are petrified of the NRA.”

He cut-off Mike Pence and said, twice, that confiscation should come before due process. That is very alarming to those of us who believe in the Constitution and its protections.

Also very troubling was at the end when Dianne Feinstein was discussing the need to ban “assault weapons,” and Trump told the room to “sit down with Dianne” and come up with something very strong.

“He cut-off Mike Pence and said, twice, that confiscation should come before due process.”

Trump said that very specifically in the case of untrained, mentally ill people who own guns and have been reported to authorities 44 times.

Do you want school shootings to continue? If not what are your viable solutions?? That’s why wants the people to not be petrified of the NRA. He wants a dialogue,. I’ve seen people petrified to talk to upper management where I work. It’s a very negative and unproductive thing.

Remember Trump ALWAYS brings up concealed carry for teachers and bullets flying back towards the cowards attacking innocents in gun free zones.

Context matters.

“Trump said that very specifically in the case of untrained, mentally ill people who own guns....”

But who determines if they are mentally ill? A competent medical expert must make such a determination, and then the court must rule that the evidence of that expert is persuasive enough to warrant depriving that person of his personal property. That is due process.

I think 44 times reported to authorities, plus the poor kid calling him self and begging for help would be enough reason.

The alternative to some mechanism of removing guns from that kind of situation fast is the school shooting. Is that acceptable?

Trump didn’t restrict his comment to that one kid. His comment was a general one.

I’m much the same, with one kid, unlikely to reproduce. Demography is destiny.

When did he disparage NRA members? Heard him tell some Senators they were afraid of the NRA, which is true, but that’s disparaging it’s members. If anything that’s acknowledging the clout they have.

For the first time, I disagree with Donald Trump when he says law enforcement should conficate firearms first with due process coming later. In everything the founding fathers did, they insisted that the Constitution be followed first, that people cannot be arrested and held without trial, that police cannot conficate personal property without due process. In this, Trump is wrong, very wrong. I will fight against it.

He doesn’t care about the 2A, he just wants to be able to chalk up a win.

That is exactly the way I see it. The "yabber" during the campaign was just campaign BS like arresting and taking HRC to court. Just BS. Just wanted to "chalk up that win" in his column for the Presidency and then do whatever the hell he wants to. Eff his followers

Trump Says Some Lawmakers Are Too Afraid Of NRA To Change Gun Laws
Trump asked Toomey if his plan to expand background checks included raising the minimum age for young people to buy an assault weapon. Toomey told the president it did not. “You know why,” Trump scoffed. “Because you’re afraid of the NRA.”

That’s not disparaging NRA members. I don’t feel disparaged by his comments to Toomey.

All weapons are "assault" weapons and the age of the perp has no bearing on the crime committed. Background checks were already performed at weapon purchases and were apparently passed. And ... guess what ... the NRA has absolutely nothing to do with any of that. It's not guilty and completely unrelated. But he threw it in there anyway. His statement drew the NRA into the conversation in a way that brought reproach upon it. That is the very definition of "disparaging".

Why even acknowledged the NRA narrative as the cause and guns as a viable issue both of which are obviously absurd.

It is like blaming the NHRA and cars for idiots who kill people by a car.
