Scientists were surprised by the results of their study.

In November, scientists from New Zealand used a hot water drill to go deep into Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf. The shelf, which can be up to 10,000 feet thick, is the largest of several that hold back West Antarctica's massive amounts of ice. If these were to collapse, global sea level would rise by ten feet.
Drilling a hole and lowering a camera and thermometer inside is a way for researchers to understand the history of the shelf, and what is happening to it now. In measuring the temperature and currents below the shelf, they expected to find that the ice was melting.
Instead, the water appeared to be crystalizing and freezing. In the video from National Geographic below, you can see the white dots of ice crystals as the camera is lowered towards the dark sea below. If the shelf was melting, the hole at that level would have smooth sides.
It blew our minds, Christina Hulbe, the glaciologist from the University of Otago in New Zealand, who co-led the project, told National Geographic.
Scientists have left instruments deep in the hole to measure currents and temperatures below the shelf for the next few years. Though the freezing seems to be a promising sign for the shelf's stability, it doesn't tell the whole picture. Scientists also hope to learn whether the ice shelf has melted in the past due to other climate shifts.
Though results of this study were unexpected, that doesn't change the larger trend of accelerated warming and icecap melting. In fact, NASA just confirmed we are losing ice in Antarctica at a faster rate every year. The reasons for these odd Ross results probably won't become clear until much more research is done. But for now, at the very least, it's a decent sign that catastrophic melting of the Ross Ice Shelf won't occur in the near future.

The dinosaurs are still with us, but they are now much smaller due to lack of oxygen in the atmosphere.
The largest ones died out about 1000 years ago, not 60 million.
.
Say what? Do you mean crocodiles and deep water fish?
.
I mean the universe is 6000 years old (the evidence is strong)
All but the very largest dinos are still with us,but are much smaller than their ancestors were, just as humans are less than half as big as the first humans were, and half as intelligent too.

>>The researchers should lower Al Gore into the hole and let him check things out personally.<<
LMAO! This is a brilliant idea.
>> Now, do you want to offer information that contradict that in a useful way? Or are you just about being snarky?<<
Well done, PG!
True, and that weakening strongly affects the amount of cosmic rays hitting our upper atmosphere.
An increase in cosmic rays means more cloud formation, which increases the albedo of the planet, resulting in lower surface temperatures.
Then there are orbital eccentricities which will come into play over the coming decade... It all adds up to an era of very cold weather.
Not talking about an ice age, but rather the minimum which is baked into the cake. The Left will pivot to ICE AGE COMING when their warming thesis is too obviously bunk and will not mention AGW again. It will all be CATASTROPHIC AGC.
The term is “shelf.” It is attached to the continental ice.
You and I will likely never agree on whether or not the northern US will be covered by a mile of ice in 30000 years.
However, the historical record of the last few hundred years shows several examples of significant multi-decade cooling, coinciding with minimal sunspot levels, causing significant human misery.
And they’ll finally be correct.
No land. All ocean. Different heat conductivity.
Ocean water freezes at a lower temperature than freshwater. ... Fresh water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit but seawater freezes at about 28.4 degrees Fahrenheit , because of the salt in it. When seawater freezes, however, the ice contains very little salt because only the water part freezes.

Cool weather does not an “ice age” make!
The one and only ice age Earth has suffered was a continuous precipitation event caused by the hot ocean water that remained after “the fountains of the great deep” burst forth through the crust of the Earth creating the Genesis flood that gave Noah his fame.
Without superheated ocean water, an ice age is impossible, since there is no other way to bring sufficient water up to the upper atmosphere where it will freeze and fall as snow and ice.
Capiche?
There are not 3000 years left in the future of planet Earth. Of this we are assured in clear Bible prophecy.
There are just a little over 1000 years left until the fulfillment of the complete destruction of the universe promised in the 3rd chapter of 2Peter.

That's one way to get rid of them...
That would certainly stun those South of the border...mass numbers of people headed there way...then they could deal with us as illegals for a change. I hope they have my freebies waiting and are ready and willing to cater to me.
Mexico and Central America are going to be overwhelmed with refugees from Canada and our northern states. Tens of millions of illegals will also be part of that mass migration.
The influx is going to change those countries forever. I expect political lines will be redrawn, worldwide.
We don’t have a disagreement about this. Fresh water has a higher freezing point, 32 degrees, than Saltwater, 28.4. (I will try to remember this.)
It’s hard to draw conclusions about their survey because the information is incomplete. I am assuming they used hot fresh water to drill. If you hit the bottom of the shelf, all of a sudden all the water in the column (the water surrounding the drill)siphons down. Was there a standing column of water, or just enough to surround the Nozzle?
