The sheriffs deputy who failed to engage the shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School believed he did a good job because he called in the location of the massacre and gave a description of the shooter, a top union official said Thursday.
School resource officer Scot Peterson, who resigned in disgrace from the Broward County Sheriffs Office, was distraught about shooting that killed 17 people but believed he did his duty, according to the president of the Broward Sheriffs Office Deputies Association.
He believed he did a good job calling in the location, setting up the perimeter and calling in the description (of Cruz), said the union official, Jim Bell.

This exposes the big lie that they run towards gunfire while others run away. And that's the excuse to take guns away from the rest of us. No thanks, I'll defend my family myself, because not all LE are going to do the job. Not casting doubt on all LE, as I know LE that are risk takers. But this guy is disgraceful.
This didn’t happen when kids would bring their guns to school because they were hunting later. They’d leave them in the truck, but still.
He set up a perimiter, because as in the case of the Orlando 'Pulse' shooting,
the 'perp' was shot and killed as he was exiting the building, while trying to take out other victims.
Incidentally, the shooter 'ditched' the AR inside the school
and exited the building in the chaos, along with other students.
I believe he was arrested later, after lunching at a SubWay sandwich shop, by a deputy who was snakeing his way through the adjoining neighborhood.
At the time of the arrest, the 'perp' was still wearing his maroon tee shirt and black jeans; so SRO Scott Peterson's description of the 'perp' was accurate,
and ultimately led to the 'perp's arrest.
Gets to retire in his 50s with a pension over $60,000 a year.
What a hero.
Yup - a real hero /sarcasm
“If he set up a perimeter, how did the shooter get away? Not much of a perimeter.”
Maybe you didn’t see the article, but once the police knew what was going on, they fired up their trusty video feed from the school and were able to watch things real-time as they approached the shooter.
...only problem - being a public school, they were not about to let anyone have live video of what goes on in there, including the police. So the video had a 20 minute delay...something that the police only figured out later.
33 years? He’s been mailing it in for the last 5. Awaiting retirement.
He was holding himself hostage pointing his own gun at himself like Black Bart of Blazing Saddles.
Anyone could have done that.
We have so deteriorated in our society that when people do simply what is expected of them, they think they deserve some sort of recognition for their effort.
Unlike Barney Fife, who probably would at least have shot something.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Your kids are just so safe in public schools.
Called in the shooter’s location and description, so some cops just like him could go neutralize him. As for containment, he obviously wasn’t close enough to see the bad guy drop his rifle and walk out the door.
“Deputy who didnt stop Florida shooting thinks he did a good job”
If he thinks his job is to go home safe at any cost he did a good job.
LEO runs to stop granny in her minivan. She won’t shoot back and its a multi billion dollar business stealing money from citizens. All you have to do is convince them that you are a hero and working for the greater good.
Are you defending this guy?
Even old barn’ would’ve fished out his one bullet from his shirt pocket and given it his old college try, shaky and all.
Don't forget, though, that the FBI had a chance to stop this before it started.
Twice.
And the local police did too.
Numerous times.
But the Deputy's under the bus all alone?
This Barney Fife-character probably just had one single bullet.
I would be curious to know his resume. I doubt that he is former military.
The cherry on this cake would be the Broward County school system giving him a medal.
