Broward County sheriff's deputies will now carry AR-15 rifles while on school campuses following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last week, Sheriff Scott Israel announced today.
The new policy was implemented Wednesday morning. In lieu of gun lockers, the only time deputies will not be "slinging a rifle" is when the firearm is locked in police vehicles, Israel said.
The rifles will not be fully automatic and will only be handled by deputies who are "trained and qualified" to operate them, Israel said.

Does this mean there will be a deputy with an AR15 posted during school hours? Or does it mean that if a deputy goes to the school at some random time he will have an AR15?

Why expose yourself?
Well, first, that's their job. And second, because they're exposed anyway.
Rifles are offensive weapons. Pistols are defensive weapons.
Only someone who knows absolutely nothing about firearms suggests taking on a rifle with a pistol. That's the equivalent of "shoot the gun out of their hand" fantasies.

I think they should also have gun towers and barbed wire around the perimeter. Post signs that say “ you cannot leave until you get straight A’s”. Just a thought.

If survival is your first concern, stay home.
They're there to protect the children, and they should be carrying the most effective tools to do so.
Pistols are great for seven yard engagements, but seventy yards is for rifles.

Funny you ask? When I joined, I grew up in a family inner city, we never had guns. The 1st guns I ever shot were at the range in the military. In those days if you were smart on the ASVAB they sent you to sub school and all the related fields.
I guess they figured when we showed up at the range since we were firing missiles and torpedoes it didn’t matter if we could shoot the broad side of a barn. What counted was safety.

If you're suggesting getting within twenty feet of an active shooter before putting them down, I think you're missing the point of armed security.
Wait, I thought that..oh never mind..
Carrying those ARs will make them very visible and obvious first targets. You take out the guard first then the whole place is easy shooting.
