Broward County sheriff's deputies will now carry AR-15 rifles while on school campuses following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last week, Sheriff Scott Israel announced today.
The new policy was implemented Wednesday morning. In lieu of gun lockers, the only time deputies will not be "slinging a rifle" is when the firearm is locked in police vehicles, Israel said.
The rifles will not be fully automatic and will only be handled by deputies who are "trained and qualified" to operate them, Israel said.

I shot at the range next to four cops from the local PD.
They were incredibly bad. Even at 10ft they were all over the place. I can only guess they were newbies.
Yeah, but keep what you have HIDDEN in deep back up.
I'm not a guard, not a cop...just a person...but you threaten me, my loved one's and friends. You are going to meet armed resistance.
And I know plenty of people in Hospitals, Schools, public places...that think just like me.
Just because they are a teacher, a nurse, a doctor, a cashier...doesn't mean they aren't capable of defending themselves....and others.
You are the one not facing reality. Teachers are in the business of building relationships with their students. You might as well tell abused mothers to "buy a gun" to keep their abusive ex-husbands at bay. Sure, some could, but they are the exception, not the rule.
People just don't work the way you envision.
ABC radio news via WLS reports: Broward County Sheriff Israel says rifles will be locked in squad car. These AR(malite) 15’s for all practical purposes are a target and small game rifle. If Cruz used a larger caliber rifle there would be a lot more dead for all all the rounds he expended there were 80 wounded. Which makes me feel most of those deaths were caused by perhaps a pistol ?
I was stationed in Berlin during the Gulf War. MP's followed the school buses in Jeeps with mounted M2. Kids thought it was "cool".
I think it's great to do this. Snowflakes need to learn that guns aren't going to just open fire on their own.
Worst aholes I ever saw at the range for sense were cops.
Here I am 150 lbs of me reading the riot act to some dipstick 325 lb cop who has no muzzle discipline.
He bows up on me and I don’t back down, I had a ton of back up.
He backed down.
Yeah,,,mine too!
Amen! and they aint targets!
Ha!!
Stay Safe !
Right back at you, sir!
What I’d REALLY like to see is a “School Marshal” program like Squantos mentioned, but open to volunteer parents.
Parents could pull security on their off-hours providing a free, rotating, roster of guards without anyone but the administration knowing if on a given day the school would have one guard, or seven.
I saw this most recently when I was there around Xmas time this past year.
Many barricades and bollards were also added since the mowdown attack. It’s srartng
*It’s starting to look like a damn board game with so many pieces everywhere.
And many people to make it work.
School cop was an unarmed security officer - and reportedly the first one shot.
Or someone desperate - or who knows there’s no other option. Go look up Mark Allen Wilson and the Texas courthouse shooting. He took on a guy with an illegally converted full auto AK type with a 1911 and drove him off at the cost of his own life.
Yep....The key will be kept at the precinct and will require a 10-working-day notice before approval will be considered at the highest levels...
Same opinions as yours ...... I could easily do 3 days a week and extracurricular activities. But as an old retired fart with a beard and a ball cap. I’ve no desire to be an employee. Volunteers with proven experience, credentials and refresher training. Pay my way be it the football game or breakfast / lunch in the cafeteria . Heck even help the janitor run a dust mop as I stroll down the hallways ..... good reason for being around all parts of the building ......
