The U.S. Army is awarding its Medal of Heroism to three Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) cadets killed in last week's school shooting in Parkland, Florida, an Army spokesperson confirmed Tuesday. Alaina Petty, Peter Wang and Martin Duque were all students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where the deadly attack unfolded.
The Army awards the Medal of Heroism to JROTC cadets who perform "acts of heroism."
"The achievement must be an accomplishment so exceptional and outstanding that it clearly sets the individual apart from fellow students or from other persons in similar circumstances," the Army said in a statement. "The performance must have involved the acceptance of danger and extraordinary responsibilities, exemplifying praiseworthy fortitude and courage."

Saluting the three JrROTC cadets who stood true to their military training and dedication to serving this nation via helping their fellow students survive. May they rest in peace.
They asked for military honors. Not sure if they got them. I don’t think they should but this is the feel good generation so who knows.
Edit of my post #20: Both of the people you mentioned should get a Carnegie Hero Award.
No medals for the non-cadets or the gym teacher?
They are Army medals for military members. There are other appropriate civilian honors. I'm guessing you have no military training or experience, and that's OK if you're confused.
Are you really that stupid to think that was why I wrote that?
Wait dont answer - youre so damn clever you think youve got me.
People are still burying their dead.
Parents are still mourning over children who will NOT be specially honored for being a hero only because they werent ROTC.
I have NO problem with them getting medals posthumously but could you at least wait a WEEK after the event so that all the dead teachers and students can receive relatively equal memorials so a non-ROTC parent doesnt have added burden of wondering if her child will ever be remembered as the ROTC kids were?
Sorry. My post #23 should have gone to you. Both of the people you mentioned should get a Carnegie Hero Award.
Thanks for the ping. I had not heard of this award.
I think a congressional Medal of Honor isnt out of the question for the teacher.
Children were armed for 100 years with no school shootings. They brought their guns to school.
Use your brain before you feel your name calling is a cheap substitute for your ignorance of history.
It is you modern adults who cannot manage a school yard. Or use primitive communication techniques.
I just hope all the other kids at the school get a participation trophy

Thats for the military only. Civilians can get the Congressional Medal of Freedom, but usually thats for a lifetime of work. The US is somewhat poor compared to other countries in awarding medals, probably due to our break with England.
It is totally out of the question.
Why not the Presidential Medal of Freedom (not the CMH)...

An especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.
They interviewed a young man who helped usher about 70 students to safety (inside closets and large ROTC room)and held a Kevlar panel to door so they wouldn’t get hurt The young cadets were working hard to do their duty during the attack. Many more would have lost their lives without their training.
There were two teachers and the coach/school guard who rode toward the shooting from another part of campus on his golf cart. Shame he wasn’t armed so he could have truly done his job.
Seriously? I think not. I’m not saying he didn’t act in a heroic manner, but that award is for our most honorary warriors. Just saying.
Very well stated, sir.
Why would it be in poor taste to honor rotc cadets?
Thanks for the ping.
These students did exactly what you would expect cadets in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps to do. Salute.
It wouldn’t be in poor taste. I think we should strive as a nation to honor more people who demonstrate heroism which made this great nation great!
