The White House signaled that President Trump would be open to bolstering gun background checks in the wake of a mass shooting at a Florida high school last week that rekindled the national debate about gun control.
The president spoke on Friday to Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn about a bill the Texas Republican introduced with Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) that would improve federal compliance with criminal background check legislation, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement on Monday.
While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the president is supportive of efforts to improve the federal background check system, she said.
Cornyn and Murphy were among a bipartisan group of lawmakers who supported the background check bill introduced in November after a church shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, that left 26 people dead.
Its the first indication that Trump would back a measure to bolster background checks.
In the days after 17 people were gunned down at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland, Fla., last Wednesday, Trump blamed mental illness and called on neighbors and classmates to report erratic behavior.
The White House also said Trump will host a listening session this Wednesday with high school students and teachers, but didnt confirm that Parkland teens will be part of the discussion.
A group of students who survived the rampage also announced that they will hold a March for Our Lives rally in Washington, D.C., on March 24 to highlight the need for gun control.
Trump spent the three-day Presidents Day weekend at his resort in Mar-a-Lago, which is about 40 miles north of the school shooting site, and surveyed members about gun control laws, The Washington Post reported.

Exactly! But Man, Oh, Man! Do the 'Rats ever wish that we were!
How would “tougher background checks” have helped? They ALREADY KNEW about this mentally ill jerk.
Put BLAME WHERE IT BELONGS
The Shooter
The FBI
You take issue with my used of the word "checked", and rightly so.
Unless we're sat down to a lie detected and asked the questions verbally, they're taking us at our word.
I guess THAT would define "tougher" - questions asked on a lie detector (which some folks are trained to beat).
Yes. Lazamataz did a great job. Spread it far and wide.
I believe that IF an individual is serving in the military or as a LEO, First Responder, they should be permitted to vote.
If the individual is not contributing to society, living on welfare or with their parents at the age of 25, they should not be permitted to vote.
I agree with you, but thanks to another Amendment - the Freedom of Religion - you can’t legislate people to follow God. Therefore you have to have something to control those who don’t.
It’s taken over a hundred years for the nation of migrate away from God, do you think it would any quicker getting them back? Especially with today’s environment, like diversity, different religions, etc.
Sure, following God would solve all the problems, but God gave humans free will, and there’s the rub.
Figure out a way around that and human nature, and get back to me.
Trump had it right by blasting the FBI for dropping the ball. But he needed to bring it home by firing Wray (a lost opportunity). It would have changed the momentum completely. Because he didnt it allowed the MSM to pivot the blame to the NRA and the GOP. Now Trump is on defense while the left is organizing a students for gun laws march in DC next month. Is there no one in the White House who knows how to conduct political warfare?
You figure out that we won’t accept any more age restrictions on firearms, and get back to me.
If that's what they're talking about it's already the law and should already be happening.
“You figure out that we wont accept any more age restrictions on firearms, and get back to me.”
But, your post explicitly said it was the “Godless Society”. Now, you’re changing horses to age restrictions?
You operate almost wholly on emotions, don’t you? ;)
Heres Why Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Never Reported Nikolas Cruz to the Police
Nikolas Cruz was a known threat. Known by the administrators of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Its a clear case where a known dangerous student was not reported to the police. Why?
Because back in 2013, the Broward County School Board adopted a program where they dont relay information to police about troubled students.
NPR reported in Fla. School District Trying To Curb School-To-Prison Pipeline;
Its a move away from so-called zero tolerance policies that require schools to refer even minor misdemeanors to the police. Critics call it a school to prison pipeline.
Under a new program adopted by the Broward County School District, non-violent misdemeanors even those that involve alcohol, marijuana or drug paraphernalia will now be handled by the schools instead of the police.
Cruz was banned from carrying a backpack at school after bullets were found in his backpack. Cruz was expelled from MSD last year after a fight with his ex-girlfriends new boyfriend.
Non-violent misdemeanors? Even so, red flags were flying.
Again, the Broward County School Board has an official policy requiring that they dont tell the police about non-violent incidents with troubled youth.
There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus, Maths teacher Jim Gard told The Miami Herald.
Lets look at a law that might cover that.
784.011 Assault.
(1) An assault is an intentional, unlawful threat by word or act to do violence to the person of another, coupled with an apparent ability to do so, and doing some act which creates a well-founded fear in such other person that such violence is imminent.
(2) Whoever commits an assault shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.
So another Liberal Feel Good program once again stepped in the way of the laws we have on the books being effective. Because last I checked, his actions of making threats to students and teachers constitutes assault.
It is possible that Nikolas Cruz would have been Baker Acted and received the needed medical attention he required before this all happened. But that wasnt the case and sadly, 17 people lost their lives because of feelz.
shall not be infringed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yeah, but they did not define it in the Constitution....../s
The founders did not consider that we would be dumbed down so far that we did not understand the plain language they used.
Shall not be infringed means just that.
Natural born citizen means naturally an American as one could not possibly be anything else, born here of citizen parents.
POTUS big mistake if you fold to liberal pressure.
Saw that...it is being driven by Everytown for Gun Safety which is Bloomberg's gun grabbing group.
They've focused group the word "Safety" to mask their true aim.
Everybody is for the safe usage of guns. Problem is, their version of safe gun use is confiscation.
Too slippery. A couple of semi-auto handguns can do just as much carnage. Then the reaction would be to "limit" those as well. A better idea is to uphold the original meaning of "well-regulated". That means every person be trained and equipped to stop such criminals as Mr. Cruz. It also means Mr Cruz is trained and equipped but he would be vastly outnumbered by the sane people.
An AR-15 is not an assault rifle.
Assault rifles are fully automatic.
I can go out and Lease (not even have to buy) a brand new Pickup Truck that weighs 5,000 Pounds and run down a Crosswalk full of Elementary School Kids on the way home (without being subjected to a Background Check).
Last time I checked, possessing a Pickup Truck is not a God Given Right as enshrined in our Constitution, but bearing Arms is a Right that “Shall Not Be Infringed”.
An assault rifle is fully automatic and those have been heavily restricted since 1934, more strictly since 1986.
AR-15’s are not assault rifles.
