Eating processed food significantly raises the risk of cancer, experts warned last night.
They said the disease was claiming more lives because of the popularity of ready meals, sugary cereals and fizzy drinks.
The products put middle-aged women in particular danger from breast cancer, according to a study in the British Medical Journal.
Ultra-processed food any product involving an industrial procedure now makes up half of our diet.
Packed with chemical additives, the foods bear little resemblance to home-cooked meals. And the more of them an individual eats, the higher their risk of cancer of any type.
Experts believe this is because processed foods, which include packaged meat, pies, sweets and crisps, are higher in fat, salt and sugar.
They also have less of the vitamins and fibre that ward off disease.
The procedures used to make the food and the chemicals and additives used to boost their flavours and shelf life are also thought to raise the risk. The researchers said it was the first study to highlight a link between ultra-processed food and an increased overall cancer risk.

Experts...phhhhht.
They need more money for more study no doubt.
I read a couple of days ago that asparagus causes breast cancer. There is nothing left we can safely eat..........if you think you’ve found something, just wait.
Cancer is caused by global warming causing icebergs to melt and contaminating the oceans with old ice water.
That's one of the big reasons that I grow my own. As an added benefit to growing my own, once I have cubic yards of the stuff taking up space in my chest freezer and refrigerator, I feel obligated to use it. I'm not getting around to eating the highly-processed foods because I still have an oversupply of the tomatoes and peppers and plums and apples and carrots and beets and green beans and on and on and on that are filling my refrigerator and freezer (plus I still have a few square feet of floor space being used for stuff I couldn't find room for in the freezer yet). I'm eating self-picked fruits and vegetables almost every day, and at least half the days it makes up the major part of my diet.
The human lifespan really hasn't increased much, once you exclude the change just due to reduction in infant mortality.
No brainer.
At least 90% of your diet should be unprocessed food your great grandmother would have eaten.
What a surprise, It’s all the foods democrats always talk about taxing. They’re responsible for every disease and problem ever. /s
This study ties in nicely with President Trump’s valiant effort to deliver wholesome “real” food to food stamp recipients.
[[But no matter how much one deprives himself of the simple pleasures of such things as bacon and sausage, he will die anyway.]]
Exactly- I may die a year or two earlier- but by golly I’m gonna enjoy my time here as best i can, and I thoroughly enjoy some processed foods-
Health food? Hell! At this age I need all the preservatives i can get!
people used to live to an average of only around 40 years old- we now live to 80+ on average- I say enjoy the extra years and stop worrying- we’ve been gifted with long life thanks to medical advances- anything beyond 40 is a gift-
This article worries me. I think I’ll go have some nachos and a Sprite.
This is all nonsense. How can anyone make a blanket statement about such a broad category and relate it to all kinds of illness and death? For that matter, people are so different, how can they generalize about all types of people being affected in the same ways by “processed” food?
Unless you are eating directly from the ground or on the hoof, everything you eat is processed to some degree or other.
We are all basically walking hunks of meat, so I say grab for all the preservatives you can get. They might just keep you healthy.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with GMO foods! They have improved the nutritional status of millions of people, particularly poor people. GMO is a boogeyman and people should be ashamed of themselves for trying to scare folks about them.
Right!!!! The also drive down starvation and drive up fat.
I believe it is largely the soy in so much processed food that is the problem. The soy in so many products does, as you say, feminize boys but also gives middle-aged women too much estrogen which contributes to breast cancer.
Scientifically, how are GMOs bad for you.
Farmers have been mixing breeds for a very long time.
I get processed foods being bad for you. I can scientifically tell you why I can’t eat high fructose corn syrup.
Sorry Tex I say you are wrong, and not in a negative way believe me
In 1935 a report to congress stated that the nutritional content of food had decreased markedly and synthetic fertilizers were not a good thing.
GMO food, if someone in this thread thinks they are ok tell me how you can spray RoundUp on GMO soybeans and they do not die. The plant still absorbs them from the plant when you eat it.
I am deep in this whole situation as it has a major impact on debilitating diseases whose numbers are much higher than ever before. I could go on for a bit and trust me fellow freepers I look into this daily as I am working with Caregivers and in my age group (Boomers) the numbers and nature of all of this is staggering. In 2015 the cost of caregiving in the US alone was $470 Billion and that is in home care in most instances
I wish it were something we could all just push away with snappy and snarky retorts but as someone deep into this it is not fear mongering, it is a fact and it is becoming clearer every day. I lost my older sister to Cancer and she shared her research with me before she died, yes it is a bit personal to me and she was the cleanest living woman you would ever be blessed to meet.
Gone, Multiple Myeloma and Kidney failure at 59
Post back if you wish, this is a profession or a large part of it and I post this only to provide information
At the end of the day You choose, and that is the way it should be
Oh, no! Not CHOCOLATE! Life as I know it is over.
My anti-kidney-stone diet eliminates too many vegetables; however, I am permitted baconand beer!
:)
We still had cancer and heart disease.. people still died. No one lived forever then either. I have a lot of super obese vegetarian co workers they have heart disease too.
