Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) cast the lone vote against bringing a House bill to the Senate floor to being the debate on immigration reform. Senators voted 97-1 in favor of moving the bill forward for discussion. Senator Cruz took the stand based on a long-held belief that there should not be a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Cruz spokesperson, Catherine Frazier told The Hill that the senator believes it would be a serious mistake for Congress to pass legislation that grants a path to citizenship for those here illegally.
Such a policy is inconsistent with the promises that he and Republicans have made to the voters, and is in fact further to the left of President Obamas position, Frazier explained.
Despite Cruz vote on principle, the House bill which will be used as a vehicle for Senate debate will move forward. Debate is expected to begin on Tuesday.

One whole Senator with any common sense at all.
So we now know: illegal aliens decide who our citizenry will be, not us.
They brought their children here and demanded we pay for them and then allow them to call themselves Us...when they have no history in our country, no relationship to us, and in fact are our former enemies in war and politics.
So Invasion is a civil right? And the Invaders make the decision on how we govern ourselves?
And one whole senator with prinviples.
Let’s fire the other ones.
Any policy towards illegals must - MUST - address the incentives that are set up by that policy. Are you incentivizing more to try their hand at illegal entry or are you incentivizing them to stay home and apply through the legal process?
With 600 million people south of our porous non-existent southern border and untold millions outside the Americas who might also avail themselves of this easy access, there can be only one immigration policy -
Stop giving prizes
for illegal entry.
Any measure that permits those who entered illegally to benefit from that illegal act is amnesty. And any amnesty will bring millions more invaders.
This must be stopped.
Will you help stop this?

Where are the Cruz haters....I’m sure they will have their spin on this.
That he didn't know he was born in Canada is absurd.
You are incorrect. The requirement is to be born a citizen, not to be born within the boarders (14th amendment citizenship) of the US.
One would think after all this time you would have looked this up...you’re sitting in front of a computer...numerous federal judges have ruled on this.
TX Democrats are convinced that they can unseat TCruz on November 6. Time will tell; hope TCruz is aware of his Kennedy-resemblance opponent.
The 14th Amendment has nothing to do with being a natural born citizen.
Nor does it mention anchor babies.
“Subject to the jurisdiction thereof” has a meaning, according to the authors of the 14th Amendment.
That we ignore it or abuse it, is not the fault of those writers.
The requirement is to be a natural born citizen.
Naturally, those born with multiple citizenships, nationalities, allegiance and loyalties are not naturally Americans.
Only those born here of citizen parents are naturally Americans as they could be no other.
The Senate is a certain sell-out; the House, probably so too; Trump, uncertain.
We have just 4 Senators that are on the side of the citizens and the rule of law.
Cotton, Cruz, Grassley and Perdue.
That’s it.
We need new Senators.
Flake, Corker, Hatch, Heller, Alexander, Graham, McCain, Murkowsky, Hoeven, Rubio, Tillis, Burr, Lankford, Gardner, Cornyn, Cochran, Collins, Sasse, Kennedy, Shelby, Ernst, Blunt, McConnell, Wicker, Portman, Isakson, Johnson, Toomey, Rounds, Thune, Barasso and Enzi are all Bush League Republicans. Basically undocumented Democrats in R jerseys.
None ruled on the merits, they dismissed cases as having no standing.
The founders excluded the children of foreign nationals with the natural born citizen clause.
By definition those born with multiple nationalities are NOT NATURALLY Americans.
The example of the Kenyanesian Usurpation should be a clear enough example that they were right to anyone.
Yet we still have people even here on FR arguing that children born to one American parent in a foreign country are eligible to be President.
Anwar Al-Awlakis kids born in Yemen are just as eligible to be President as Ted Cruz.
Without citizenship, a special class with special rules is established. I'd much rather see a tough road to citizenship or get out of the US.
For an example of citizenship by birth to a U.S. citizen, presidential candidate Ted Cruz (running in 2016) was born in Canada to a citizen mother and a non-citizen father. Under the version of the naturalization statute in effect at the time, Ted was a citizen at birth provided that his mother had been physically present in the United States for 10 years before Ted’s birth, and at least 5 years before she turned 18. There’s no particular reason to doubt that Ted’s mother satisfied these physical presence requirements, so Ted is almost certainly a citizen from birth.
Likewise, presidential candidate George Romney (ran in 1968) was born in Mexico to two U.S. citizens. I have never researched in detail the citizenship law that existed in 1907, but my understanding is that he was a citizen from birth by virtue of his parents’ citizenship.
