Scoop: Trump team considers nationalizing 5G network
Axios ^ | January 28th, 2018 | Jonathan Swan, David McCabe, Ina Fried, Kim Hart

Trump national security officials are considering an unprecedented federal takeover of a portion of the nation’s mobile network to guard against China, according to sensitive documents obtained by Axios.

Why it matters: We’ve got our hands on a PowerPoint deck and a memo — both produced by a senior National Security Council official — which were presented recently to senior officials at other agencies in the Trump administration.

The main points: The documents say America needs a centralized nationwide 5G network within three years. There'll be a fierce debate inside the Trump administration — and an outcry from the industry — over the next 6-8 months over how such a network is built and paid for.

Two options laid out by the documents:

The U.S. government pays for and builds the single network — which would be an unprecedented nationalization of a historically private infrastructure.

An alternative plan where wireless providers build their own 5G networks that compete with one another — though the document says the downside is it could take longer and cost more. It argues that one of the “pros” of that plan is that it would cause “less commercial disruption” to the wireless industry than the government building a network.

Between the lines: A source familiar with the documents' drafting says Option 2 is really no option at all: a single centralized network is what's required to protect America against China and other bad actors.

“Can anyone imagine the Government not completely screwing this up?“

No l cannot. They would screw it up in ways we cannot even imagine. By the time they finished we would back to dial up modem connection speeds.

“2. Big corporations already do far more censoring than the government.”

The carriers NEVER censor.

Never.

The carry all bits without reading them.

We need a system redundant in many characteristics if it hopes to survive.

Bell Labs did a really good job of making their land line system robust (but not through redundancy). The current Cell Phone system is not nearly as good in the reliability metrics as a land line.

Let the peeps experiment on new systems with a goal of high reliability of communication.

Public Safety has had a monopolistic nationwide construct known as FirstNet foisted upon it. It is exclusively through AT&T. Many are predicting a dismal failure. This 5G Initiative sounds similar.

“Can anyone imagine the Government not completely screwing this up?”

Name ONE SINGLE THING (ONE) that it has done well since 1975. Before then, the one thing that it did well was that it DID protect us from alien invasion.

Or to guard against a Deep State blackout

My greatest fear because it's both devastating and quite possible.

“Land lines and rotary phones.”

They have (or had ) DSN, independent telephone service.
The system should also use relay switching to be less vulnerable to EMP attack.

I’m thinking Fake News here. Last time I looked, they not only didn’t have 5G standards, they didn’t even have a 5G model, with some pushing for wider bandwidth on the current model, and others pushing for microcells.

I have no idea if this is true, fake news or a trial balloon. But I do know that free market private enterprise with its COMPETITION will usually produce far better results. Bypassing private enterprise in favor of a governmental one-solution should only be done in cases of rare TRUE natural monopolies.

Wasn’t 4G kind of a sliding scale of performance anyway?
