Is Trump About to Trump the Dems on Immigration?
Powerline ^ | January 27,2017 | Steven Hayward

They are right on the merits. But I wonder if Trump isn’t calling the bluff of the Democrats about the DACAns. I don’t think Democrats want a deal—or any deal short of complete amnesty for everyone and anyone, which ain’t gonna happen. I’m guessing the Democrats would rather have the issue to run on in November, thinking they can whip up their base and, if they gain a majority of one or both houses of Congress in November, cram what they want down Trump’s throat. Resistance and all that. The last thing they want is for Trump to have a signing ceremony on the White House lawn for an immigration reform that has eluded the last three presidents, and which will necessarily involve compromises that will leave people on both sides unhappy to some extent. (Above all they can’t give Trump the satisfaction over The Wall, even though that would be the sensible thing substantively for Democrats to trade away.) But it would remove the issue for Democrats, and likely boost Trump with some Hispanic voters, where some polls show him actually increasing support from election day 2016. Mickey Kaus thinks along the same lines. (See below.)

I’m hoping the Democrats are this stupid and will stick with this intransigent position, rather than running on the issues where they might actually find more favor from the general public. Meanwhile, Democrats say they are going to have some DACA kids in the gallery for Trump’s upcoming state of the union speech. Some clever person has suggested that Trump mention one of them out by name, note that he’s ready to offer them a path to citizenship, and that they should ask Chuck and Nancy why they are standing in the way of it. Stand back, and watch liberal/media heads explode.

After reading that DO that was given on January 21st, declaring a State of Emergency, and locking down numerous things, it crossed my mind that with that EO, Trump now has the indisputable authority to nullify DACA, stop ALL immigration, deport whom he pleases, and prosecute Obola for doing DACA in the first place.

I think it was too risky for Trump to have done this. The Democrats could have said yes to making 1.8 million illegals citizens, and pretended that they would fund security and the wall in the future. They did that with border security for the 1986 amnesty bill.

Why not? He has done it on everything else.

I really don’t think we have to worry about President Trump playing “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today” with Democrats.

I don’t like amnesty for anyone. But there will be some type of deal for children of illegals. As long as Trump’s other immigration priorities are fully funded and implemented, I’m OK with that.

I used to get triggered by feints from Trump on immigration.

Remember in 2017 when he said he would bypass Repubs and negotiate directly with Dems ?

If you read Trump’s book about negotiation, he says you have to determine the other person’s bottom line, while concealing your own.

So what do we have ? In the shutdown negotiations we have unlikely people like Gutierrez saying “trade Dreamers for the Wall”.

And we still don’t know what Trump’s bottom line is. He is concealing it deliberately while getting everyone else to reveal their hand.

One good negotiating technique is getting the opposition to not take ‘yes’ for an answer. Makes clear that what they demand isn’t really what they want.

“The issue is not immigration. It’s illegal aliens.

I refuse to refer to criminal invaders as “immigrants”.

Criminal aliens.

I think Trump is doing well on this. He offered what most Americans would have considered a fair deal, a path to citizenship combined with no deportation as long as the "Dreamer" did not commit any crimes.

The Dems' problem is that they know the "no crimes" provision is a poison pill for them. Illegal voting by non-citizens is an important election-winner for them. If Dreamers have something to lose by illegally voting, they are more likely to stay home on election day.

Deport and replace with people already in line who have not had their chance and they are willing to follow laws...pushy lawbreakers can go to the end of the line and wait their turn.

Thus I suspect some sort of dem/pub deal with amnesty and a figleaf over a down payment on a wall which then lands in Trump’s lap to sign or veto.

Trump has been clear on what he expects. The Republican controlled congress will never give him a bill they know he will veto.

That's what you do when the party is in power.

The problem is they cannot isolate the DACA/DREAMER legislation from an overall immigration reform. It makes no sense to do so and no sense that they believe they can do so.

Trump is applying political Ju-Jitsu on them. They will only get angrier and make more mistakes.

Pretty good political hardball from a supposed amatuer player.

Trump is, first and foremost, a businessman. So yeah, he knows how to be tough.

That’s one of the reasons I liked him from the beginning.

According to Democrat chatter, Democrats are trying to stall the immigration issue until after the 2018 elections. They’ve convinced their hordes that if they can get a Democrat majority in Congress, they can impeach the President.

They going for dividing conservatives on immigration at the same time by trolling on conservative discussion boards to say that Trump’s not trying to do anything about immigration. It’s an old feminist and homo-activist tactic.

If you want action on immigration, you’ll need to get as many Republicans as possible to the polls this year for congressional elections. The hysterical pink hat horde is likely to show up at the polls in unprecedented numbers to get a Democrat majority in Congress.
