California father who’s lived in U.S. since he was 2 faces deportation after ICE arrest

LOS ANGELES – Family members are worried about the possible deportation of a 30-year-old father of two who was recently detained by ICE after living in the U.S. since being brought here when he was a toddler.

"ICE is abusing their power. They're doing this all across the nation," Roman Maury said outside a court hearing for Torres on Thursday. " He wasn't doing anything wrong. ... He was dropping his kids off at school."

ICE spokeswoman Lori Haley said Torres was targeted for arrest by deportation officers with ICE's Los Angeles-based fugitive operations team. All ICE arrests are "targeted" and never "random," Haley said.

Haley said in the ICE statement that Torres' criminal history includes DUI and felony narcotics possession.

But Roman Maury said Torres has "a few misdemeanors" and no felony record.

Advocates for Torres say he poses no threat or harm to the community, and Roman Maury said her client has learned from past criminal convictions, which she painted as mistakes of youth.

Torres is the father of a 3- and 7-year-old, and has been living in the U.S. since he was brought here by his grandmother. He hardly speaks any Spanish and has no family in Mexico, Arellano said. He works as a manager at a solar panel company in Chatsworth and is a youth football coach.

Make an example of him and send him back wherever he came from.

Exactly.

He knew he was here illegally... did he make any effort to remedy that?

Heretofore, he had no need to do that.

Guy cuts in front on the line and still thinks he’s special. He’s a insult to every legal immigrant.

He is taking a job illegally. Why is his employer not in trouble? Whose ID has he stolen to get and maintain that job? Another crime.

It looks like he was eligible for DACA....unless he did have a felony.

The reporter curiously left those little details out of this sob story.

The media would never show gang bangers being deported. That would make normal people cheer ICE doing their job. All illegals need to be gone, no matter their present circumstances.

He had plenty of time to apply for and receive citizenship. No sympathy from me.

Deport him.

Deport a few, the rest will quickly get the message. That’s why illegal entry is down.

Doing the jobs Americans won’t do? How low is the pay, and how poor are the working conditions, that they couldn’t find an American to fill that slot?

You know, in the case of the "Dreamwrs", in my mind its a simple question:

Ok, your parents brought you here at a young age. Since that time, have you:
1. Taken steps to become a citizen or permanent resident?
2. Made the most out of the opportunity, i.e., gotten education, contributed to society (working, paying taxes, not working the system), etc.
3. Have stayed out of trouble (no felonies or continuous string of misdemeanors)?
4. Can show proof that you have tried to integrate into society?

If the answer to any of those is "no", you have to leave. Apart from the "dreamers", if you're illegal, you go back.

If he was here for 28 years he would have been a candidate for DACA registration.

But his criminal record disqualified him for temporary protected status under DACA to live in the U.S.

Cry me a river.

Well, felony narcotics posession did kind of screw that up for him.

This man is an illegal alien who has compounded that crime with further crimes. Make an example of him and send him back wherever he came from.

Worse, actually. He’s a criminal alien. No American with equivent charges in Mexico would ever be allowed to live there. Period. What’s good for the goose...
