Senate Democrats Kill Bill to Keep Government Open Past Midnight
The New York Times ^ | 19 Jan 2018 | Sheryl Gay Stolberg and Thomas Kaplan

WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats, showing remarkable solidarity on Friday in the face of a clear political danger, blocked consideration of a stopgap spending measure to keep the government operating, leaving less than two hours for lawmakers to find a way to avert a midnight shutdown of much of the federal government.

Senate Republican leaders fell well short of the 60 votes necessary to proceed on the spending bill, which had passed the House on Thursday. Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, was trying to rally support for a shorter temporary spending measure that would allow both parties to save face.

But even if the Senate adopted such a bill, it would also have to pass the House. With time running out, at least a short shutdown appeared inevitable.

The 10 p.m. vote came after a day of budget brinkmanship in Washington that included a last-minute negotiating session between President Trump and Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader. The 90-minute meeting produced progress, both men said, but no deal. Just hours later, it appeared to collapse.

The Democrats committed treason, murder, and now sedition. Soon, thirty million Americans will come to Congress with pitchforks and end this travesty.

Absolutely they did. This is not even in dispute anymore. We should have a March on the Mall. A massive march. Fill it up with a million patriots. This was from the Promise Keepers in 1997 (I was there). Let's do it again.

Your point is excellent, but a very big reason those people are being hurt in those states is because of the political leadership of those states - and the exhorbitant taxes they've levied on their constituents.

Taking California as an example, the state sales tax is 7.25%, and the top marginal state income tax is 13.3% - both highest in the nation. It's estimated (probably underestimated) that illegal immigration costs California ~$23 billion dollars/year. That's ~$600.00/year for every man, woman, and child in California, yet several cities and California politicians insist on giving sanctuary to illegals and even threatening to prosecute people who cooperate with the federal government. Total revenues in California in 2016 were around $120 billion. Of that ~$81.6 billion came from personal income tax. So, the cost of illegal immigration alone accounts for ~28% of the total state income tax collected annually.

I'm not dumping on immigrants, and definitely not blaming all of California's fiscal issues on illegals, but this is just one example of policy-based expenses that lead to higher taxes. The money has to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is taxes. Those Republicans running for seats in those states should campaign on lowering the tax burden in those states, and there are many ways to do this that are humane, fair, and maintain quality of life.

I notice that AL’s Doug Jones opposed Schumer on the shutdown; he is probably wanting to win again in 2020, and Schumer didn’t need his vote.

Still, nearly a third of the military consists of persistent Democrats.

Louisiana claims to have the highest state sales tax and would be disappointment if CA stole the title from them.

People in NY are strong supporters of the shutdown, and Schumer knows this very well.

NYT:

Democrats standing firm = "remarkable solidarity"

Repubs standing firm = "Hard line stance"

Outrageous. Dems vote robot-like in lockstep. They are willing to shut down the country if their pet illegal aliens do not get perk.

Democrats and some Republicans also obviously do not care for the well-ware of US citizen but rather those of foreigners who should not even be in this country.

Yes, you are right. But be sure to explain to all who will listen, just how idiotic the Leftist posturing really is. Prove our points, not just summarize them:

Some days Ryan seems to be coming around to reality, some days he seems still to be embracing the rationalized notions of the most myopic of Corporate management. Based on over six decades of fighting the Internationalist efforts to subvert the Federal Republic achieved by Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Madison, etc., I would make a suggestion:

We need to spend far less time speculating on the motives of those who ought to know better, but seem to endlessly rally to the patent fallacy that people are interchangeable--and hence it does not matter who comes here. Ryan may be devious, or just confused. But the reality is that a non-discriminatory immigration policy simply ignores the reality of human existence--we are all different. And if Ryan or your next door neighbor actually believes that it does not matter, whom we let in, they embrace a ridiculous fantasy.

More to the point, not only does an immigration policy which does not differentiate between candidates for admission, not protect the unique character of our institutions, founded by specific people with specific priorities; it insults the significance of the cultural pursuits and achievements of every other social culture/or ethnicity of every achieving people on the planet. In answer to the fantasy/egalitarian world of the American Left: Yes, Americans did build it, just as Mexicans built what they have--both the good & bad.

In short, the answer to confused, egalitarian fantasy "let's pretend," is mutual respect, coupled with a recognition of every people's right to build a heritage step by step, generation by generation, that reflects that people's right to prioritize what is most important to them.

Immigration worked best, when we drew people who came here because the unique culture appealed to the immigrants own unique personalities. In recent mob scenes, clearly hostile to our heritage, we can see how truly different are many of the more recent arrivals. The point is irrefutable.

Exactly.

Sociology 101: Some cultures are incompatible. In scores of countries the treatment of women, for example, is contrary to ours.

Thank you. I agree of course. It is a state problem. But the Republicans are shooting the hostage in order to solve the crime. If you are a Conservative in New York, California, New Jersey, Connecticut, Illinois, or other places, you got stabbed in the neck by the Tax Law.

Let's not minimize that. It is what it is.

I just have no patience now for people clutching their pearls about us losing the House this fall. WE TOLD THEM not to pass this crappy tax bill!!!! They did it anyway.

I agree. The aim of the tax bill should have been to reduce taxes for everyone, without victimizing citizens because of where they live. That said, all the states you listed have significant fiscal issues, and are therefore potentially open for candidates who have workable solutions. Many in Connecticut are very unhappy with Malloy and his penchant for losing corporations and replacing the revenue lost with higher taxes. Illinois is in big trouble, and people there are also tired of increasing taxes. California is so conflicted they are talking about splitting apart.

New York and New Jersey are also hurting - although if brain eating aliens ran as democrats in NYC they'd win. Anyway, all is not lost, and good things are happening. Hopefully we'll see some sincerity and savvy from those Republicans running in 2018.

Trump essentially controls spending when there is a shutdown.

Where is this written. I've not heard of it before.

Probably because Mulvaney is OMB .... I also think he's a more effective spokesperson than Ryan.

Sean Hannity: All of the important aspects involving the government continue, and those people that are furloughed usually get their money back, because Congress will give them back pay and a free vacation.

Mick Mulvaney: Yeah, I mean...here’s how I explained it to people. I explained it this — obviously, I’m — the reason that, obviously, I’m heavily involved in this, Sean, is that the Office of Management and Budget is charged with, you know, sort of implementing running a shutdown. In fact, I found out for the first time last night that the person who technically shuts the government down is me, which is kind of cool.
