Kelly calls some of Trump's campaign pledges on immigration, wall 'uninformed,'
The Washington Post ^ | January 17, 2018 | Ed O'Keefe

Posted on 01/17/2018 4:46:29 PM PST by Pinkbell

White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly told Democratic lawmakers Wednesday that the United States will never construct a physical wall along the entire stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border and that some of President Trump’s campaign promises on immigration were “uninformed.”

The comments put Kelly at odds with Trump, who repeatedly said during his presidential campaign that he would build a border wall that Mexico would pay for, not U.S. taxpayers.

Kelly met with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, House Minority Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) and Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.), who chairs the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, at the U.S. Capitol in his fourth formal face-to-face encounter with Hispanic lawmakers, who have been deeply critical of Trump’s position on immigration policy.

During the meeting, Kelly repeatedly said that Trump supports enacting permanent legal protections for young immigrant “dreamers” and that he has helped the president evolve on immigration policy. But the meeting ended with no resolution to what exactly the administration wants in exchange for authorizing permanent legal protections for the at least 690,000 people enrolled in the program, according to several attendees.

White House aides didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

As the meeting began, Kelly said he had asked to meet with the group at the urging of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who has been in frequent contact with Kelly over the last several months and told him that the group is critical to reaching a deal.

Hoyer told Kelly later that the views expressed by lawmakers in the room represent “the will of the Democratic Caucus” — a reminder that House Democrats overwhelmingly support protecting dreamers and strongly oppose Trump’s calls for stricter border protections.

Good thing John Kelly doesn't make the decisions!

All he needs to do is keep everyone in check & stop the leaks!

But once again, is there a source for this -besides- the word of a democrat?

Aha! And with one fake story, the Washington Post has succeeded in frightening the pearl clutchers within our FReeper community.

I watched Kelly’s interview as well and agree he is a great chief of staff for Trump. He will give Trump great advice and keep the riff raff out of the oval office.

The thing about the liberal media is that they will twist a “yes” to mean “no” and vice-versa.

Actually, I used to live in South Texas.

Large sections of the border are nearly impassable desert and a long way from any town or road. The wall is most needed in stretches where there are cities, towns, and roads that make crossing easier. Probably hundreds of illegal aliens already die every year of dehydration trying to enter the US illegally. If they had to walk another 75 or 100 miles that number would be in the thousands or tens of thousands. That would represent a huge disincentive to crossing the border.

Several hundred miles of wall, in the right spot, would make a huge difference. It would probably do 90% of the job at far less cost than the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific ocean wall, especially when combined with other measures. That’s how I understood President Trump’s promise. If he can build a wall across the whole border great, but if he gets 400 - 500 miles built, in the right place, it will be more than enough for him to claim he kept his promise.

It’s all fake news: from the Fox News Story: As for the wall, Kelly said experts talked to Trump about how there “are places where, geographically, a wall would not be realistic.”.....Asked about Trump’s famous pledge that Mexico would pay for the wall, Kelly said: “In one way or another, it’s possible that we could get the revenue from Mexico but not directly from their government.”

Any deal giving amnesty to the DACA folks will never be accepted by the bulk of the base, without a major sales job. People are tired of being pissed on and being told it raining. They will recognize a BS deal right off the bat. Been there done that and have tee shirts to prove it.

I saw him on fox tonight. He was great. Very loyal to Trump and gave the impression he respects Trump
He was also not egotistical

Good choice.

Why do a fence when you can do a wall with better protection?

Because it's cheaper. If the protection of a fence is "good enough" and it will be easier to get the funding then do it that way.

I haven't really studied the problem but there are probably portions of the border where a fence will be "good enough" due to the local terrain. And there are probably portions of the border where only a wall will work.

Let's get this thing built!

Well I agree but if its done right and we get what we want, it is the way to success.but i only give that 10% chance but it is reasonable. They are not reasonable!! They are shutting down the government for illegal aliens!! They know its not working and they are hitting panic !!

Trump said we don’t need a wall in places where natural formations serves as a barrier. In those places you need technology to watch. But there will still be plenty of uncrossable wall.

Just had a Representative on CNN who was in the meeting (Hispanic Caucus). She was essentially confirming the article, talking about how Kelly was telling them Trump was an uninformed candidate, but it was his goal to inform Trump.

We can build it, we need to build, we should build it. Sea to Sea. Complete. No gaps for any reason. Access roads for easy patrols. Tunnel monitors. A real, physical, manned, comprehensive, modern border. That is what is required.

Such an absolutist implementation of "the wall" would be patently impractical, exorbitantly expensive, and—most importantly—totally unnecessary.

It also would bear little resemblance to what the President actually suggested during the campaign, if one takes into consideration the totality of his statements on the topic.

It's hard for me to believe that anyone would consider as realistic such a strident, hyper-literal interpretation of the President's proposal.

I heard the Kelly interview with Fox. It backs up that he says we only need 800 miles of barrier, and he said Trump wasn’t fully informed while campaigning and has evolved on this issue.
