This just in from what was once the best state in the Union:
Guess which state has the highest poverty rate in the country? Not Mississippi, New Mexico, or West Virginia, but California, where nearly one out of five residents is poor. Thats according to the Census Bureaus Supplemental Poverty Measure, which factors in the cost of housing, food, utilities and clothing, and which includes noncash government assistance as a form of income.
Given robust job growth and the prosperity generated by several industries, its worth asking why California has fallen behind, especially when the states per-capita GDP increased approximately twice as much as the U.S. average over the five years ending in 2016 (12.5%, compared with 6.27%).
The Left's first, last and only instinct is to throw more money at the problem, but California's already done that. and guess what?
Its not as though California policymakers have neglected to wage war on poverty. Sacramento and local governments have spent massive amounts in the cause. Several state and municipal benefit programs overlap with one another; in some cases, individuals with incomes 200% above the poverty line receive benefits. California state and local governments spent nearly $958 billion from 1992 through 2015 on public welfare programs, including cash-assistance payments, vendor payments and other public welfare, according to the Census Bureau. California, with 12% of the American population, is home today to about one in three of the nations welfare recipients.
The generous spending, then, has not only failed to decrease poverty; it actually seems to have made it worse.

They have the richest poor people in the country...................
No magic dirt.
A full answer to that question would require terrabytes.
The big one cannot happen too soon, but hopefully not before they secede from the union.
That way, the millions and millions of extended third fingers extended by the rest of us will be schadenfreude to the max.
Illegals getting gov. freebies.
Ya gotta have serfs.
Jerry Brown is the official nut of California.
Every Californian over the age of 50 still thinks that they have a world-class education system.
Notice is says “one out of five residents”...not “one out of five citizens.”
wrong jerry brown ruined it when he let teachers have unions in the 1970’s from top to bottom in 30 years his father is probably crying in his grave
California’s GDP actully grew at twice the US rate for the past 5 years, so how come it’s the poverty capital?

To paraphrase Maggie Thatcher, ‘Socialism is fun until you run out of other peoples’ money.’
California is more concerned about developing and keeping sanctuary cities than in providing for the general citizens. How much do those illegals contribute? What is the appeal — other than future votes?
I initially read that headline as
The State Now Leads the Nation in Pervertry..
The $1,000 answer eliciting it was 'creeping totalitarianism'.
Will they become victims to their own raising of taxes?
Will CA pot-smokers rue the day they got pot legalized?
You know, the days before when pot was free from government taxation?
When you are in a fog of pot, you will have a difficult time seeing into the future.
Can we just agree that California ranks worst in just about every category?
Even in categories where it should look good, the state government finds a way to tarnish it.
They want everybody to rely on the government.
Marxist democRats.
Smoke pot..smoke pot..everybody smoke pot..
RE: Can we just agree that California ranks worst in just about every category?
Then again, there’s the weather...
