Alabama Declares State Of Emergency Over Flu Epidemic As Death Toll Rises
Newz Sentinal ^ | 1-13-2017 | Daisy Luther

Citing a strain on “overwhelmed” health resources, Governor Kay Ivey declared an official State of Emergency in Alabama on Thursday due to the rapidly spreading flu epidemic.

WHEREAS the State Health Officer has reported that an outbreak of the influenza virus has occurred in the State of Alabama; and

WHEREAS this outbreak poses a high probability of widespread exposure to an infectious agent that poses significant risk of substantial harm to a large number of people in the affected population; and

WHEREAS the health care facilities and personnel of the State are overwhelmed by the number of ill patients and taxed to such an extent that care of patients may now no longer be provided in the traditional, normal, and customary manner nor is the utilization of traditional, normal, and customary standards of care possible.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kay Ivey, Governor of the State of Alabama, pursuant to relevant provisions of the Alabama Emergency Management Act of 1955, section 31-9-1 et seq., Code of Alabama (1975), on the recommendation of the State Health Officer, do hereby declare that a State Public Health Emergency exists in the State of Alabama. I direct the appropriate state agencies to exercise their statutory and regulatory authority to assist the communities and entities affected. I also direct the Alabama Department of Public Health and Alabama Emergency Management Agency to seek federal assistance as may be available.

Wife and I got our flu shots in November
We came down with the flu this past week. It’s been reported they’re running out of Tamiflu. And it is expensive! I’m sure lots of people don’t have the money to pay for it.

I have never had a flu shot and never get the flu. Well, I did get something once about 20 years ago for two days.

I think besides vitamin C, vitamin D is very important.

It’s a Stephen King movie called The Stand. There’s a killer flu that basically wipes out society, called captain Trips.

Bumpty bump.

Mine seems ok with vaporub (on me) too. But I did read the warning about essential oil diffusers this morning - so I thought I would mention it. Bad enough to get the flu, but terrible to have a dead kitty at the same time.

What might work would be to mix the oils with a neutral carrier like olive oil or petroleum jelly or lanolin and rub it on your chest or on your shirt a la Vicks. Then it’s where you can breathe it without filling the room with something that will be noxious to your pets.

Cats being curious, they’ll probably nose up to you anyhow.

It would make sense that strains that the vaccine is ineffective on would spread fastest, once they got going...

As I am still recovering from a 3.5 hospital/rehab stay over Summer 2017, I have been working from home. For this, I am eternally grateful. This flu scares the bejeezus out of me. I had the flu shot, but not convinced it will help much. A coworker went inpatient for a couple of days with pneumonia after Christmas, got out and picked up the flu. He went inpatient again before the new year with sepsis and multiple organ failure. He got out of ICU this past Friday. And he is one of the lucky ones.

If any FReeper begins to develop flu symptoms, do NOT put off going to the doctor. This stuff can put the healthiest person in the hospital...or even the morgue. Take care everyone.

I guess this is part of getting old, nearing 73.

I had the flu once in my 40s. While it didn't take a month to get over, it knocked me off my feet! I was in absolute misery, so it's not just your age.

They have revised that estimate somewhat saying that it is more like 30-something percent effective. Even if one gets the flu after being vaccinated, it is more likely to be less severe. I worry about my grandchildren, especially the baby who is too young to be vaccinated.

Your points on how to avoid being sick sound good, but you should tell folks how to do that. For example, how to nutrify your body etc.

A lot of vaccinations are nonsense, but if blindly trusting the government is working for you, go ahead.

I have asked a couple times here on FR, and also tried to do some web searching, as to (vaccination aside) what flu strains common this year seem to be worst, and how symptoms might vary from strain to strain. This information seems to be harder to get than the truth of what is going on at the FBI!

I sure got whacked over the holidays, and was slow to recover...

My wife likes to use an “efficascent oil” for practically every malady she gets. This product is, per the label (weird mix of units), per 100 ml of fluid:

13.846 ml Methyl Salicylate
3.846 g Camphor
0.423 g Menthol
4.615 ml Turpentine Oil
1.0 ml Eucalyptus Oil
color q.s.
Liquid Paraffin q.s.

Our cat (several, over the years) acts almost like this stuff is catnip, and will try to lick it off of a person if given a chance.

We’ve never noticed any ill effect, but...???
