Theresa May proposes plastic-free supermarket aisles in green strategy

Theresa May is to announce a war on plastic waste, with proposed policies including plastics-free aisles in supermarkets and a tax on takeaway containers.

The prime minister will set out her ambition to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste within 25 years in a major speech on Thursday in which she will promise the UK will lead internationally on environmental issues. But campaign groups said the aspirations would need to be backed up by legislation.

They also warned that leaving the EU risked weakening environmental protections, and called for the government to promise it would not water down green standards in exchange for rapid post-Brexit trade deals.

May’s speech, unveiling a much-heralded 25-year plan for the environment in England, drawn up by Michael Gove’s environment department with input from pressure groups, is expected to focus heavily on plastic waste, which she calls “one of the great environmental scourges of our time”.

As reported before the speech, May will promise to extend the hugely successful 5p levy on plastic bags to smaller shops, and seek evidence on a possible charge on single-use plastic containers such as takeaway boxes. …

Her country is overrun with Muslims and May is concerned about plastic bags in grocery stores.

Well if your country's intelligence service had just colluded to interfere in an ally's most recent presidential election what would you do ?

A similar argument was used for replacing cloth diapers (which wasted water in cleaning) with disposables.

These Government Idiots think banning plastic bags will stop them ending up in the ocean , the bags in the ocean come from Central/south America , Africa ,middle east etc etc , not the west

Great idea!

Great Britain does not have even one aircraft carrier that can launch aircraft. Plus little Serbia has more main battle tanks than does the UK. Plus the UK is overrun by Muslims who want to make Sharia the law of the land.

So it only makes sense that Theresa May would want to focus on how much plastic is used in UK supermarkets.

Well, once sharia is the law of the land they won’t have to worry about toilet paper waste.

“So what do we use instead?”

Bring your aluminum snow shovel and use it to scoop up stuff off of the floors of the aisles...cause that’s where it’s gonna pour without the evil plastic holding it all together. Dump your collections in a wheelbarrow.

Later on, at home, just dump it all out on the kitchen floor and begin sorting the dry peas and corn out of the Skittles, the jelly beans and the Cheerios. Grits are gonna be a pain. Jolly great family time though.

Good. You probably have a good reason to do it.

I don’t have a problem with plastic.

This whole scheme is merely a double down on the recycling scam to keep people from looking too closely at it.

There are actual garbage inspectors over there that fine people for not separating recyclables properly - yet much of the plastic secretly ends up in landfills rather than recycled! Same happens here, the market for recycled plastic is limited and the process is not cost effective whatsoever requiring heavy government subsidies to keep the whole scam going. The majority of the plastic collected is just overflow that gets buried like the rest of the trash.

I’m all for the environment, and plastic is a problem, but I wish she showed some concern for the children of her country and what they will have to face...not from plastic, but from Jihadis.

Glass jars for peanut butter and such? Step backwards

I don't know about that. I know milk tastes better in glass bottles and peanut butter probably does too...

Well that’s it then, England is being run by Moron’s. They are committing cultural suicide, and this is the kind of problem that they want to focus on? Please, someone tell me where there collective heads are at.

When I lived in London in the 60’s you had to pack up your own groceries in your own bags. I was shocked. They do this today at Aldi’s Supermarket right here.
