Do Electromagnetic Anomalies In Atmosphere Herald Earthquakes?
Science Magazine ^ | 12/21/2015 | Julia Rosen

Scientists have detected electromagnetic anomalies before major earthquakes, like the magnitude 9.0 event that struck Japan in 2011, triggering a massive tsunami that wiped out coastal communities like Ōfunato, shown above.

Can electric signals in Earth’s atmosphere predict earthquakes?

By Julia RosenDec. 21, 2015 , 1:45 PM

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA—Ask seismologists when they’ll be able to predict earthquakes, and the answer is generally: sometime between the distant future and never. Although there have been some promising leads over the years, the history of earthquake forecasting is littered with false starts and pseudoscience. However, some scientists think that Earth’s crust may give hints before it ruptures, in the form of electromagnetic anomalies in the ground and atmosphere that occur minutes to days before an earthquake. Last week, here at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union, researchers shared their evolving understanding of these phenomena—and how they might be used to predict deadly quakes.

Kosuke Heki, a geophysicist at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan, first got interested in the subject when he spotted an increase in the total electron content of the ionosphere—the charged outermost layer of the atmosphere—above Tohoku about 40 minutes before the magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck in 2011. Heki had long used GPS data to study ionospheric responses to earthquakes, which occur when the sudden movement of Earth’s crust reverberates through the atmosphere. Ionospheric disturbances interfere with the communication between GPS satellites and receivers, leaving a fingerprint at specific radio frequencies that researchers can tease out.

In 2011, Heki was skeptical of electromagnetic precursors. But since then, he has used the world’s growing array of GPS stations to identify similar signals before nine other major earthquakes, he explained at the meeting. In addition, Heki has found that earlier anomalies precede stronger earthquakes, potentially reflecting the longer time needed to initiate rupture along larger segments of a fault.

40 minutes isn't an escape window from an earthquake, hence my dad got us all out of there a long time ago. But not before the Sylmar Quake.

I can believe it. The Earth is a big electromagnetic machine, as are all the planets and the Sun. Squeeze a tectonic plate against another, and the effect is like a piece of quartz generating electricity, and electromagnetic emissions may affect natural electromagnetism in play in and around the Earth. Whether mankind can identify changes in signals and match them to probable earthquakes is another thing. In any event, warnings would probably be too late and of little effect.

Interesting thing to study IMO, the atmospheric electromagnetic anomalies.

I also think an early warning system could be useful, even if it only gave you fifteen seconds warning to get out of a precarious position and into a more secure one.

If you’re on a ladder, get down and get in a doorway inside. Move away from overhanging things if outside.

As for the California quakes, they generally do not cause massive death counts. Construction codes have gone a long way toward reducing deaths.

After the Joshua Tree quake, I was talking to a friend of mine a week or so later on the phone. He told me an aftershock had just hit. It too about 15 to 20 sends to get to me.

He was in the Ontario region, and I was in Glendale.

If pressure builds in an area it will ‘squeeze’ the minerals in the crust. If you squeeze (change pressure ) certain types of rock (minerals), they produce electricity.

This electrical ‘charge’ creates an electro-magnetic field. Observers have long reported that just prior to earthquakes there are electrical ‘flashes’ in the sky.

It is a wonderful planet we live on, and we really have a lot to learn about it.

I agree, and I’m all for it unless Leftists make the observations and read all sort of political nonsense into them.

There’s often some sort of lightning discharge when earthquakes are occurring; don’t know if anyone has figured out precisely why, I’ve heard some say the compression of minerals in the ground causes the generation of an electrical field.

Here is a surveillance camera video which caught the Napa California quake of several years ago with accompanying light discharges:

It's called piezoelectricity. It results from the deformation of certain crystalline minerals. Some practical uses include mechanisms that create the spark to start gas stoves and BBQs. One of the minerals that has strong piezoelectric properties is quartz, one of the most common minerals on Earth.

I strongly believe there's something to this hypothesis. During the Northridge quake my wife and I were transfixed by the amazing light show while the ground was shaking. It resembled sheet lighting and continued for the duration of the quake. Critics have told me I was seeing electrical transformers exploding. Good trick, since all our utilities are underground.

Either that, or that is simply the flashes of electrical systems shorting out, from the quake.

One of those.

:)

Is it Electromagnetic’s, or the lack of electromagnetic influence from the sun????

Superstorm Sandy also had many ground based electrical flashes. It looked the same as that earthquake video.

It makes sense that electromagnetic anomalies would precede a seismic event. Assume veins of quartz in the ground that is undergoing seismic strain. Quartz is a piezoelectric crystalline material, and if squeezed will generate a significant electric field. Thus we should expect electromagnetic effects before and during an earthquake.

Dutchsinse has a very good record of forecasting earthquakes. He does weekly forecasts (Youtube videos) on Sunday night which he then updates with activity throughout the week (more videos). He has a novel method that is highly accurate (often 25 out of 27 forecasts avg). He rates his accuracy as whether the anticipated earthquakes occurred within 200 miles of the projected location and within + or - 1 magnitude. I’ve been watching him for several months now and he’s good. His website also has a walk through of his method of forecasting because he wants people to learn how to forecast fore themselves. His website is Dutchsinse.com.

Well, I can see that I will have to bring my vast amount of knowledge about science stuff to yet another thread.

First, let’s discuss electrical animalies. There is the electric eel. Let us not forget the, what do they call those things, oh, fireflies. These must not be confused with the Great Flaming Wolf Spiders!!! that have already burned up three apartments. Maybe they burned down three apartments. I don’t think the flaming spiders care, so let’s just let it go at burned down.

Now, we shall examine the atomsphere. It is a sphere made of atoms. If it was bigger, it would be a moleculesphere. But it isn’t. It’s just a little atomsphere. Teeny tiny. So small that you could barely fit a bicycle in it. Maybe just a scooter.

So you would have to have a real little electrical animalie to put in this atomsphere. Like maybe an electrical baby hedgehog. Something pretty small. No electrical elephants or nothing. Geez, how’d you like to have an electrical elephant. We could get rid of those stupid windmills. And if you needed electricity somewhere else, well, the electrical elephant could just pack his trunk and go there.

Finally, we have Harold Earthquakes. You can call them Halquakes for short. That reminds me of hotcakes. You got to have butter and maple stirrups with hotcakes. I could sure go for some hotcakes right now. Maybe even some warmcakes. I’m not a fussy eater. Except for snails. I won’t eat snails unless they’re barbecued and wrapped in bacon with a dollop of Coolwhip. Is there any food that isn’t better with a dollop of Coolwhip? I think not. I put Coolwhip on my Coolwhip. Mighty tasty.

Where was I?

Electrical animalies eating hotcakes with Coolwhip.

So the answer is, as it is for all questions, “How the heck would I know and please pass the Coolwhip snails.”

Most of those flashes I would attribute to line-to-ground faults on overhead power lines or transformers or surge protection fuses blowing. Simple overcurrents in the electrical distribution system power lines faulting, either phase to phase or phase to ground.

There might be issues associated with grinding rock materials, changing dielectric constants of the materials and then allowing normal ground currents to form, then arcing in unforeseen fashions.

There might be some esoteric particle physics occuring associated with gravitons and photons and electrons, but I don’t believe there is any technology to support those more sophisticated notions.
