[Most Americans were probably drop-jawed to learn there was a state in the union where government overseers prohibited the people from pumping their own gas.]
In New Jersey is still prohibited from self service.

This does not even affect city dwellers. Just counties with 44000 or fewer

Ive lived in this state my whole life and I refuse to pump my own gas. This is a service only qualified people should perform. I will literally park at the pump and wait until someone pumps my gas.
I see an opportunity to make some money! Enterprising folks could charge these dolts a few bucks to pump their gas for them.

New Jersey.
I was shocked to hear that OR had that in place. I was there 25 years ago with my relatives and don’t recall that being that way.

I used to live in Seattle and had relatives in Oregon. It was a major annoyance to be forced to wait for them to pump my gas.
I coined the phrase, back around 1990, that I prefer self serve because the service is faster.

Next, legislators will require wearing respirators when pumping gas, to protect the pumpers from hazardous fumes.
And in the future, why not require all drivers and passengers to wear helmets?

In High School I had a good friend who’s Father was Minority Leader in the Oregon House.
Apparently there was an arrogant lobbyist for the ‘Oil Companies’ who was trying to pass a law to allow self serve (saving the gas stations money, many were owned by ‘Oil Companies.’).
As the vote was going on this lobbyist got a smirk on his face when it looked like the law was going to pass.
Both parties looked up at this despicable man and, due to his arrogance, voted in a bipartisan way to defeat the law.
True story.

Certainly Oregonians should be allowed to pump their own gas, but not without a government permit involving mandatory training classes, proficiency testing, and a pit crew standing by with fire extinguishers ready. Also the high-capacity nozzles currently legal will have to be replaced with ones restricted to a quart a minute. All of these will, naturally, cost a good deal of money, but a substantial tax hike should cover that.
To: Liberty7732
There may be more to this though. After so many drove off with the nozzle still in the tank spilling gas all over the place, most or all the states that allow self serve have required updated systems that have break away hoses. There may be other modifications necessary for safe self service. Oregon likely has very outdated gas pump systems and would need to upgrade.
I always thought the Oregon law was to preserve jobs, not for safety.

I wonder what Portlandians do when (if?) they drive out of their state and pull in to a gas station for gas? Just sit there at the pump waiting for service?

Now Oregonians have something else to do beside condescendingly staring down their noses at Californians stupidity. They can stand befuddledly staring at a gas pump wondering “how does this thing work”.
