The Marine Corps is doing away with its 0351 infantry assaultman military occupational specialty and phasing out the assault section of Marine rifle companies in an effort to build up communities such as cyber and electronic warfare, Military.com has learned.
Commandant Gen. Robert Neller, who confirmed planning in December while on an annual tour of deployed Marine elements around the world, said he expects the move to happen in the next three to five years as part of a slate of changes designed to help the Corps prepare for future fights.
The 0351 infantry assaultman, one of the Marine Corps' five core infantry positions, is tasked with breaching, demolition, and rocket fire against fortified positions. Assaultmen carry the MK-153 shoulder-launched multipurpose assault weapon, or SMAW.
But Neller said he's making changes that will ensure those roles are filled by other members of a rifle company.
Each future rifle company will have an element of combat engineers aligned with it to take on breaching and demolition duties. The engineers will carry the SMAW, but they may not be the only ones.

I’m not sure I see it as Marine issue, but I can say that for 8 years under Obama there was a whole lot of talk about “cyber” and the importance of network security. Really important. Big topic. Gotta spend money. Big priority. So important.
And as far as I can tell, budgets for Cyber were simply cut every year under Obama.
Because, you know, treason.
It will be nice if President Trump actually treats it like it matters.

This seems like a bad idea. What happened to ‘Every Marine a Rifleman?’
Cyber is best done with a group of people who can resource it and pursue it to the nth degree.
It’s a combo of government effort and outsourcing the people who are very good at specific areas of it.
Using Marines in this way, or any other way that isn’t expeditionary seems like a bad idea. As long as their rifles are offline, it seems to me like you don’t have an issue. Ditto for the A-10s, which should heretofore be a Marine airframe.

Yeah, cause they really don’t have anything else to do.
They need to open up more roles for women, so they are cutting back on grunts. Today BS what Obama has done to the USMC. Cyber and electronic men don’t take Iwo Jima, Hue, or Fallujah.
The current crop of Obama Generals are worthless...yes Including Mattis.
Electronic warfare is rapidly becoming something that needs to be conducted at platoon level on the battlefield these days, what with the advent of lethal-capable man-portable drones.

These days Cyber and Electronic warfare happen on the battle field direction with the soldiers. If you can jam their signals at close range you get bombs and drones all over you. The Marines need this stuff more than they need a low tech bazooka.
Don’t worry the Mathis-led influx of LGBTXYZs, crazies, druggies, and gang-bangers will fill those 0351 vacated positions. There is also a pressing need to make sure every Marine is fitted with pink high heels for those ‘special occasions’ and tutus for the artistically inclined.
I’ve been carrying a DD-214 for a looooong time. Talking to my younger friends who are active duty Army Infantry Officers, this seems to be the trend in all Branches. Basically, they are being taught in IOBLC to hunker down and let the zoomies and the King of Battle do their thing and then go forward and mop up the remainder...When I asked them about urban combat and “collateral damage”..crickets..

there is nothing to finish the fight with but Crunchies with their guns, knives, teeth and claws.

But how many casualties will have been given and taken before all the tech toys are gone? Most of the killing in modern war, since 1914, was done by the artillery after all. And later air. Even in Guadalcanal and Vietnam.
A very DOD reaction! “Cyber” is the new BIG DOD initiative, it’s where the money is! Infantry, rifles, rockets, that is so War of 1812! Every service needs a band of cyber warriors honed to a sharp edge on years of “World of Warcraft”.
Marines need to do what Marines have always done efficiently bring death & destruction to a foreign enemy.
Let the NSA or Defense Inelhandle that. Do you think the Russians or ChiComs have eliminated combat infantry positions. We have a lot of smart computer people here. Put them to work.

Between cellphone activated IEDs and repurposed civilian drones they are already up against this stuff TODAY.

Good point... and muskets run out of bullets so crunchies should focus on learning swords and clubs.
OR we could teach marines to fix they **** and finish the fight.
I work in the industry bringing in the cool cyber toys. Let me set things straight. These toys are use ON the battle field by people on or VERY near the battle. And in the future those that can’t fight with this stuff will die, without ever seeing what killed them.
In the age of muskets you are recommending we stick with only tried and true spears.
In the age of the maxim gun you are recommending we don’t distract soldiers with such complication and we stick with the Brown Bess musket.
