Donald Trump’s Biggest Fear: A Romney 2020 Primary Challenge
National Interest ^ | January 8, 2017 | Jacob Heilbrunn

Posted on 01/03/2018 7:52:40 AM PST by C19fan

With Sen. Orrin Hatch’s announcement that he will not run again in 2018, Mitt Romney is on the verge of gaining his revenge against President Donald Trump. Until now, the Republican establishment has lacked a figurehead behind which it could mobilize against Trump. If Romney runs for Hatch’s position, he will be poised to challenge Trump in the 2020 Republican primary and to seek to rejuvenate the GOP establishment. Having failed twice, he may believe that the third time is the charm in running for the presidency.

My wife’s father just died at 88. His health went from “pretty normal” to bedridden in three years. I’m just saying that at Trump’s age, all sorts of things can begin happening to his health that makes a run out of the question. I hope it doesn’t happen, but the odds are fairly high that it will.

That is what I mean. The lamestream pundits will ask us as if to remind us how wonderful things were during Obama.

I will NEVER vote for Mitt Romney for ANYTHING. I’m not the only one.

Yep, I learned my lesson. NEVER AGAIN

Sadly for Mitt he was out-liberaled by Obama.

Well, yeah, but there is a huge difference (often) between 70s and 80s for aging, for people in reasonably good health. I have known plenty of people to remain quite sound through their 70s, with or without some health annoyances. 80s are a different kettle of fish.

Was your father-in-law retired?

Sorry to hear about his health, but guys who are retired can go down quickly.

That said, Trump is a workaholic who thrives on it.

I think the odds are greatly in favor of Trump staying in the saddle a LONG time.

Not even close. Trump won his election. Romney lost.

Mitt lost because he didn't fight back against Candy Crowley.

Too much of a gentleman to slap the tar out of a woman (metaphorically speaking).

Trump would have knocked her on her bulbous fanny (metaphorically speaking...or maybe not).

DACA has been rescinded. No new applicants and it will end in March. It is up to Congress to come up with a solution.

I’m sure Trump is shaking in his boots over the prospect of facing the perpetual loser known as Mittens. After having conquered and destroyed 15 republicans in the last primary season, then going on to destroy Clinton, the Clinton Machine, 0bama, the media and now it looks like the DoJ/FBI machine as well.

Mittens won’t even be a speed bump for Trump.

Romney knows his chance for the White House has passed. He’ll be more like McCain and Flake, complain about Trump and vote with McConnell for the most part.

yeah, I think Trump will work until he dies, or a severe stroke incapacitates, but doesn’t kill him. Hopefully that will be after 2024. :)

It ain't going to happen. If Romney couldn't beat a weakened Barack Obama in 2012 after four disastrous years of that loser, then he sure as hell isn't going to beat a typical Democrat when he's eight years older.

If Romney really wants to run for president he's doing two things that are the absolute wrong path to the presidency. He might get away with one of these two, but not both:

1. He should run in 2020 as a sitting governor, not a U.S. Senator. Senators are rightly seen as dopey losers who have no leadership capabilities at all.

2. He needs to be running as an elected official in a swing state and/or a large state, not a place like Utah that is so culturally different from the rest of the country.

Interestingly, I don't think any Republicans who are interested in running in 2020 are lining themselves up for a primary challenge to Trump. More likely, they're anticipating a very realistic scenario where Trump simply decides not to run again.
