Donald Trump’s Biggest Fear: A Romney 2020 Primary Challenge
National Interest ^ | January 8, 2017 | Jacob Heilbrunn

Posted on 01/03/2018 7:52:40 AM PST by C19fan

With Sen. Orrin Hatch’s announcement that he will not run again in 2018, Mitt Romney is on the verge of gaining his revenge against President Donald Trump. Until now, the Republican establishment has lacked a figurehead behind which it could mobilize against Trump. If Romney runs for Hatch’s position, he will be poised to challenge Trump in the 2020 Republican primary and to seek to rejuvenate the GOP establishment. Having failed twice, he may believe that the third time is the charm in running for the presidency.

They will elect him. Its almost a certainty.

Its also a near certainty that he will use his election to immediately run against Trump. But if he doesn’t, for some reason, he’ll try to be like the next John McCain, a constant irritant and an unreliable vote in the senate.

He got one thing right - Romney is nothing but a figurehead.

Actually, I believe he got TWO things right.

Romney is a figurehead and a member of the 'establishment'.

If you thought the putdowns against Little Marco and the rest of the GOP field in the 3016 primaries was something that will be nothing compared to the number the president would do on Mittens in 2020 if he runs!

Mitt might win in Utah but as a national candidate he will lose by 49 States.

The mask got ripped off of Romney when he didn’t go to the mat during the campaign & let Obama win a 2nd term (he might as well have been wearing a pink pussy hat) .... not the man many thought he was.

Then there’s the horrible speech he gave against Trump where Mr. White-Starched-Shirt showed his true colors .... a very black heart. He thinks he’s “better” than Trump and thus those folks that identify with Trump. The GOPe needs to understand that while he might end up in the Senate because the Mormons in his state will vote for him, he’s a non-starter with Trump’s base and Willard cannot win anything beyond a Senate seat without those voters. Willard is, as the saying goes, “dead to me”. I would seriously hate to see him in the Senate ... he’ll be a boil on America’s (and Trump’s) butt the whole time he’s there and every time he opens his mouth, the enemedia will be treating him as a perfumed prince & trying to set up whatever airy platitude he’s mouthing off on as a cage match with Trump.

In 2020, there will be a yuge question the pundits are going to be asking - "Are you better off now than you were during the days of Barack Obama?"

I disagree, I think most pundits in 2020 will be trying to "enlighten" us about all the ways we are NOT better off than we were under Obama.

I’m not sure Trump will run in 2020

Not run in 2020? Don't be ridiculous.

The only thing that could prevent Trump from running would be if he dropped dead at the Resolute Desk.

Being a former NYer, I have followed Trump for many years. He's a big thinker and this is his chance to leave his mark on the world.

BTW, 1 year has already passed and he is just getting started. In 3 more, he will be hitting his stride.

Believe me, Trump is now unstoppable.

That was my first thought, that Romney will try to primary Trump. Romney has always been much more vicious toward GOP rivals than he ever was toward Democrats.

But he will fail.

My favorite line of these terribly over-wrought piece:

For good measure, he is also denouncing Pakistan as an ingrate nation and signing off on sending lethal weaponry to Ukraine.

LETHAL weaponry? As opposed to the inoperable WWI rifles the State Department sent to the Mujahedin or the Volleyball sets sent to the Contras as humanitarian aid?
