Six years after the Sandusky scandal rocked Penn State, university leadership is still fighting a civil war over the case, a conflict fueled, in part, by weaknesses that have developed in investigations that concluded top Penn State officials covered up for the convicted child molester.

He was relentless.
‘The 1998 incident was investigated by a state child welfare agency and was officially investigated and documented by the Executive Director of Second Mile.’
which was of course instigated by the mother’s complaint to the cops...regardless, it is unlikely Paterno would not be aware of an investigation against his top lieutenant...
‘Paterno never called any cops, campus or otherwise.’
technically, Schultz oversaw the department of campus security, so...
Penn State put the kabosh on Virginia hiring because you can’t hide a pedophile head coach, and Penn State just wanted Jerry to go away and disappear. I think the fact that only one school was really interested in pursuing him still says something. He stunk and everyone knew it.
It won’t be over until the truth comes out. Joe was a pedo and it was more widespread than Sandusky.
The whole Sandusky story was the ultimate in FAKE NEWS. Sandusky was a saint. His program helped thousands of kids. He didn't smoke. He didn't drink. And he didn't molest any of the gold diggers.
I say this as someone who has no connection with Penn State save for having attended one football game there to support their opposition.

If you're a typical FReeper as I am, you know that the media are scum. You don't believe what they say about us. You don't believe what they say about the Obamas. You don't believe what they say about the Clintons. Please believe me when I say you shouldn't believe what they've told you about Jerry Sandusky.
And, of course, if Jerry Sandusky didn't do what you think he did, then obviously Joe Paterno didn't do anything wrong either.

Excellent observations. I also wondered why Sandusky was not picked up by Division I contenders. You explained the reason. I think AD in their respective conferences and division talk with one another a lot.
He was.
Half expect him to suddenly appear, ranting about how we just hate Paterno and are somehow trying to “get him”.
Let’s be fair and not forget scumbag Rendell knew also. The rumors were floating all in the 90’s as I visited PSU and it came to a head in ‘99 as PSU played at the Alamo Bowl and the internet expanded. The crimes/cover up were as kept secret as the Catholic Church’s. Denial from top to bottom at the university (including ALL law enforcement) was sickening. I read the grand Jury report the Sunday morning it came out and it very specifically outlined all crimes including Joe Paterno (who I looked upon as a role model)and by law should have reported. It still makes me sick and true/full justice will NEVER be done.
He knew when to stop asking questions so as to retain his plausible deniability.
And let’s not forget: penn state wanted to be known as the most gay friendly college.
And they trumpeted the butt pats they got for this.

And, the '98 allegations were in the local paper and on local news. As I recall, the coverage just faded away. Makes it especially hard to believe he didn't know.
He retired after Joe, explicitly or implicitly, that he would NEVER be head coach at Penn State.
