Breitbart executive chairman Steve Bannon has cut ties with Paul Nehlen, the far-right activist who is challenging Paul Ryan for his congressional seat and who has received extremely favorable coverage from Breitbart in the past.
"Nehlen is dead to us," said Arthur Schwartz, an adviser of Bannon's who is familiar with the former White House chief strategist's thinking.
Nehlen, who became a lightning rod for his anti-immigrant views, has escalated his rhetoric in recent days with a number of incendiary tweets.
In one tweet, Nehlen proudly revealed that he is reading "The Culture of Critique," a book about Jewish culture widely considered to be anti-semitic. In other tweets, he has used the "#ItsOkayToBeWhite" hashtag.
The inflammatory online activity has drawn fierce scrutiny from Nehlen's critics, and beckoned the question whether Breitbart, which previously published highly supportive coverage of his candidacy, still supported him.
When Nehlen challenged Ryan during the 2016 Republican primary, Breitbart dispatched Mathew Boyle, one of its top writers, to Wisconsin. Throughout the race, Boyle taunted Ryan on the campaign trail with outlandishly negative stories while simultaneously writing positive articles about Nehlen. Ryan ultimately walloped Nehlen by a margin of 84% to 16%.

But Breitbart and Bannon, a former White House chief strategist, have recently moved to distance themselves from him.
Nehlen, who previously published material on Breitbart, has seen his author page scrubbed entirely from the far-right website. Moreover, Joel Pollak, a senior editor at Breitbart, publicly denounced Nehlen on Twitter.
"We don't support him," Pollak tweeted late Tuesday night, adding that Nehlen had "disqualified" himself. As of Wednesday afternoon, Breitbart had not denounced Nehlen on its website. A Google search returned no articles this week about Nehlen's latest tweets or statements.

Unfortunately, he has become radicalized by these alt-right folks online. He's become obsessed with Jews and white identity politics. His Twitter feed reads like that of an alt-right troll, not that of a person who wants to campaign against a person two heartbeats away from the Presidency. Breitbart indicates they are backing away, although we don't have a formal statement from Bannon yet. I've seen many others back away recently.
I'm not a big fan of Paul Ryan, but at least he has gotten things through the House (many things are held up in the Senate). He's also a viable candidate. If Paul Ryan hadn't have gotten anything through and Nehlen had stayed the same as he was in 2016, he'd have gotten a lot of support. Paul Ryan has, though, and even if Nehlen managed to beat him in the primary, he'd go down like a rock in the general.
When Paul Ryan smoked Nehlan in the GOP primary, everyone here on FR who is not a fan of Ryan should have gotten a reality check and realized that many of these establishment Republicans aren’t nearly as unpopular with their constituents as you’d believe if you only read FreeRepublic posts all day.
It is okay to be White.
Nehlen has turned out to be totally unsupportable, maybe there to ensure Ryan wins.
It’s not okay to be white?
Removing Ryan can only be done indirectly. Face it his Congressional constituents love him! It’s a fools errand to go after his seat. Get enough anti-Ryan Pro-Trump Congresscritters elected to take away his speakership, that’s all you really need to do. His home constituents might then fall out of love with him. Then go after him directly but then ‘why bother?’.
It sounds like Nehlen went from being anti-establishment to being a loose cannon for some reason.
Wise words
I think his district is a Democrat district.
I'm not a huge fan of Ryan, but I can't really complain about his performance as House Speaker.
If you are an anti-Semite you are finished with the Trump movement.
If you remember Ryan was not enthusiastic about job.
There are too many two faced double talking chameleon RINOS to be trusting any of them. Personally, I have seen enough of Ryan to believe he fits the above description to a T.
Mark Levin stated something to the effect that Nehlen is a nut, after he lost to Ryan.
Nehlen has gone off the rails. He has completely indulged anti-semitic, vile nonsense.
I think Trump beat Clinton by 10 points in the Wisconsin 1st District last year, too.
LOL. Levin said the same about Trump during the primarys. This article smells like Red State.
It may be OK to be white but it is not OK to be anti-Semitic.
Dump him. We don't want or need that crap...
