The embattled National Football League announced its decision to cancel this weeks edition of Sunday Night Football on Tuesday; hoping to avoid a ratings bloodbath as a less-than-stellar line-up and New Years Eve festivities would have caused the NFL to reach embarrassing new lows.
The league opted to call-off the game before announcing which teams were scheduled to compete, adding the match-up wouldnt have playoff implications and would likely cost the already troubled organization millions of dollars.
We felt that both from a competitive standpoint and from a fan perspective, the most fair thing to do is to schedule all Week 17 games in either the 1 p.m. or 4:25 p.m. windows, said a spokesperson for the NFL.
The National Football League is struggling to wrap up its disastrous 2017 season, with millions of fans tuning out or staying home following months of player protests.
Industry insiders predict the demonstrations have cost the NFL over $500 million.
President Trump thrust the issue into the national spotlight earlier this year, calling for a national boycott of the NFL until officials and owners clamp-down on their athletes taking a knee during the performance of the Star-Spangled Banner.
They should have never taken away from Monday Night. I never understood switching the marquee game from Monday to Sunday
The NFL used to be able to absolutely rely on season or package ticket holders having the seats covered no matter when they announced the game would be played.
I’ve seen in the past switches made that simply didn’t matter. The fans would be there.
But not now.
The NFL has lost the passion of its fan base if nothing else.
And I was so hoping to see a Browns 49’ers match-up..................
“Is less money lost money?”
No.
And the networks still pay the NFL billions for the broadcast rights.
Is there an NFL team that has lost money this year?
I dont remember this ever happening in the past.
Nor can you remember it happening in the present.

What about remembering it happening in the future? Huh?
I would not be surprised if this is the FINAL SUPER BOWL.
n f who cares????
The criminal vs communist match up?
If I had the hacking skills (not to worry, NSA, I don’t)—I would have Heidi play in lieu of every NFL game and the Superbowl...
That would be _my_ protest... :-)
LOL. Someone is showing their age!
Procter and Gamble is much less forgiving.
Less money in FY 2017 is a cause of concern.
They don’t want to be embarrassed when no one shows up to the game.

So this was a double whammy for the NFL. Not only were they expecting minimal TV viewers for the Sunday Night Game, but they were also expecting maximum ‘no-shows’ at the stadium for said game.
2017 is ending on a fine note in so many ways.
I haven’t watched a single game this year. Only accidentally have I even heard them reported on.
They disrespect the USA and let others slide.
They kneel at the Anthem and the presentation of the flag, but they don’t kneel when it matters to them, like 4th and goal from the 1 at the end of the game.
So, their protests are not really about getting attention for a cause. They are about disrespecting the nation.
What game was cancelled?
As I recall, after a certain point each Season, the NFL Sunday night scheduled game can be changed depending on certain criteria. If say a game had Playoff implications or other significance the original scheduled game was bumped by the more relevant one.
I believe that they have invoked that on occasion, but I cannot recall no game being scheduled.
Does not matter much to me, I want very little to do with that rotting carcass of a League.
The Bengal’s stadium is almost a graveyard at their recent games. It’s a lousy team, but used to be it would be filled. Now they have trouble giving the seats away. Last game it was about half empty.
