A high-speed Amtrak train derailed onto Interstate 5 between Tacoma and Olympia Monday. Casualties and injuries are reported. Drivers are being told to avoid the area and expect alternate routes to be backed up.

This kind of **** should only happen in undeveloped countries.
Given this was the first-ever high-speed passenger run on this “upgraded” route, I wonder how many times they bothered to test the process with a fully-loaded train prior to welcoming the trusting hordes for a mostly death-defying ride.
Relax, Casey Jones. No one's saying it's a bullet train. :)
Wouldn't "high speed" be correct, relative to other passenger trains in that market, at least?
Yeah, that’s just sad where people in this country are so indoctrinated to the governments are the answer to everything. Our city, state, and federal governments are the problem but these people easily tune all that out and find something else to blame.
Even though I’m in a conservative state, people here still vote for their government goodies. It’s why our budget and taxes are such a mess. I wish the 16th Amendment had never happened, and the Fed Reserve & 17th Amendment to a lessor degree but they all had their part in this tax & spend mentality which has corrupted this nation over time as corruptocrats now pimp the treasury for votes.

I’ve been out and heard in the radio something was placed on the tracks.
KFI LA says at least 6 dead.
Yeah, could be a combination of things happening. The witness I heard said he saw the train approaching and was going faster than any train he had seen go through there. Who knows if we'll find out the truth. We're still waiting on the Las Vegas shootings.

The Las Vegas shootings were caused by global warming, free market capitalism, white supremacy, racism, income inequality, industrialized civilization, and Trump.
It’s TRUE! I saw it on CNN and MSNBC confirmed it!!!
In all the pictures I see the rails look like they’re all the new style one with concrete ties instead of wooden ties.
Yes, I know that, which is why I pointed out those two curves on either side of I-5. Seeing as how that stretch is repurposed track, did Amtrak or BN run a safety study to establish speed restrictions, or that they could even move those long cars through that track?
A lot of industry track and sections like that have restrictions on what maximum car length you can run, speed, and can only run 4 axle locomotives on them.
They just assume we forget as soon as the next catastrophe happens.
Total BS, this project goes way back into Bathhouse Barry’s regime.
CNN is a farce, a gigantic sack of lying sh*t, and they continue to circle the toilet bowl.
It seems that I5 both directions are closed. It’s the main north/south corridor. Traffic backed up for miles.
It was the Titanic of AMTRAK - the train was on its inaugural run to Portland when it went off the tracks at high speed (some say it was doing 80mph) into a curve. The mayor of Lakewood, the town where trains regularly go through said there will be an accident on that new run because of safety items that were held back due to cost.
Had a look on google earth and discovered at least one item contrary to news reports.
The views from behind the blue engine are facing in the direction of travel. The blue engine was pushing from behind. The front engine can be seen ( I think ) partly onto the roadway of the SOUTHBOUND lanes of the I-5. From that you can picture how the train came off at the curve where the investigators are (but they are not ahead of the train’s motion, they are where it came off).
I verified this by checking that the grafitti on the bridge (LABRAT KHAT) was there in Nov 2016 on my version of google earth, and also the highway light before the bridge (although this is “southbound” the view faces west-southwest as the highway curves around from Tacoma to Olympia.
There is no curve beyond the (unreached by train) northbound lanes which are separated by a wooded area about 100 to 200 yards wide. Presumably these northbound lanes are not affected by the accident.
It’ll likely be closed tomorrow too in order to complete the investigation. They have to get it right so people will have to find other routes to where they need to go...
There was a train guy speaking about how trains will pile up like this at slow milage....but we’ll just have to wait until they determine what is what. A witness didn’t seem to think it was going fast.
Local TV news just confirmed what I posted earlier and say that the northbound lanes of I-5 remain open. Only the southbound lanes are closed (probably will be for some time as they investigate and remove the wreckage which they will need to do from the highway by the looks of google earth).
Great photo! It’s a 30mph curve and the engineer tried to take it at 80mph. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why the train continued on a straight ahead trajectory and came off the tracks.
