This ‘decorated Green Beret’ is a total fraud

Brooklyn Army vet Papotia Reginald Wright’s resume was impressive by any standard.

He boasted of a Purple Heart, Bronze Star — and a slew of other medals as an elite Green Beret that got him into swanky galas and even field access to the Giants.

But Wright is nothing but an accomplished fraud, it was revealed Thursday.

He never served with Special Forces, never served in any combat role — and never rose above the rank of “specialist,” according to military documents obtained through FOIA by Guardians of the Green Beret.

Wright even lied about how long he was in the Army, claiming he served 25 years when he was really only enlisted from 1982 to 1990, the documents show.

He spent most of his time as a driver, with stints far from any battlefield in Alaska, Egypt, Georgia and Texas, according to his papers.

While living his lie, Wright became a prominent figure in the local military community. He even started an organization to help vets in Brooklyn last year, calling it the 8th Special Forces Regiment New York Honor Guard.

There are more people claiming to be be Vietnam Vet’s than the total of those who served in Vietnam. As you said, those of us who did serve can sniff them out rather easily. Not sure why they do it but a person who served honorably gets the same amount of respect from me as one who saw combat. There’s no real glory in war, just allot of hurt and destroyed bodies and minds.

I tried to enlist in the Marines two days after NK captured our ship. I was 4Fb flat feet and high BP. I met a retired Colonel years later and he said he considered me a Marine. I never told anyone I severed, but I’m proud I tried.

("I mopped the Admiral's hallway" just doesn't have the same ring as "I was a member of the Admiral's inner circle)

LOL...back in the 90s when I was the Provost Marshal Operations Officer in Yongsan, there was a pretty clear policy for requesting and obtaining post access for non-USFK personnel and vehicles. It was not uncommon as when a GI married a Korean on-post they would want the Korean brides family to attend, or Senior officers would want to host a Christmas party and invite members of the Korean community. If people complied with the USFK reg and got us the list of people and vehicles in advance we could run checks with the Korean National Police and had very little problem. What frequently happened is somebody would come in on a Friday afternoon wanting to gain access for that weekend. When told that it wasn't going to happen they wanted an exception to policy and I would hear, "I work for General Tilelli!" I would look at the chain of command pics on the wall and say, "I work for President Clinton!" (Gen. Tilelli's office would on occasion request last minute access, but his people would always send down an exception to policy letter when doing so...he was the USFK commander, it was his regulation I was being paid to enforce, and if he wanted to waive it so be it.)

So I was flying my Messerschmitt Me 262 into Canada. Was flying to attack the redcoats in Niagra falls. I’m doing mach 26 when all of the sudden, the fan belt goes out on me. And I dont have a spare! But what I do have is a pair of nylon stockings that I was saving up to use to pick up any Canadian chick in Toronto. you know, after the war, when we will have occupied it. So, I tie a rope around the joystick of the plane, and the other end of the rope around my waist so that I wont fall. I hit a switch to put the plane into auto-pilot, flip open the canopy, and crawl out onto the nose cone of the plane and pop open the engine hood. Sure enough the fan belt is broken. So I replace it with the nylon stockings. Satisfied that it would hold, I close the hood, get back into my cockpit, and continue on with my successful bombing run.

Very sad. A humble career but a modern, mechanized Army will always need drivers. If he had simply been honest about his time and service and still organized charity events for vets as a civilian, his reputation among them and in other organizations would probably be stellar.
