By now everyone is likely aware of the Fake News story run by CNN on Friday surrounding an email received by Donald Trump Jr. The email was part of the investigative evidence shared with the House Intelligence committee; and later leaked from within that committee to CNN – thereby initiating the false reporting on the content.
The central issue in the CNN story was the date of an email.
It was leaked from within the committee, and later reported by CNN, that the date was “September 4th, 2016”; a date convenient for a collusion narrative between Trump Jr and WikiLeaks.
However, the real date, on the actual email, was “September 14th, 2016”; a day after Wikileaks published the content of their DNC leaks and a date that makes the entire CNN report a ‘nothingburger’.

Why is this important? If Trump Jr., or Donald Trump his own self, “colluded” with WikiLeaks to tell the people the truth about Hillary, they were just doing their jobs.
CNN will try to turn it around and make it about the White House disseminating false information to Congress. “This is a very serious breach of integrity coming from the President.”

That is one way to catch the leakers. Give each suspected leaker different information and see what comes out. If the leak said Sept 1, it was person X. If the leak said Sept 4, it was person Y.
But I don’t know that this method could work in this particular case - the House members could very easily cross check their documents. Something this “explosive” would raise eyebrows and they would discuss it among themselves and their legal aides and surely someone would notice that they each had different set of documents. In the case of secure document viewing someone would have to change out the document each time a new House member went to view it to pull this off. Not sure how doable that would be.
What’s nice is it gives them probable cause to review the leaker’s phone records and subpoena his texts.

Add in things that likely wouldn’t be double-checked, e.g. find some reason to include a short list of made-up names that would utilize easily overlooked simple misspellings.
for example: “Miltenstein” could show on one copy and as “Milltenstein” or “Miltenstien” on another. Or even common names like “Johnson” could be “Johnsen” on a different copy.
Even if they did compare handouts and saw misspellings, it would likely be ignored as a simple typo and not a sting - unless they were very suspicious.
