FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Reuters) - A man who vandalized a Florida mosque in January 2016 and left a raw slab of bacon on its doorstep was sentenced to 15 years in prison on a hate crime conviction, a state attorney’s spokesman said on Wednesday.

Wolfe was also sentenced to 15 years of probation, to be served after his prison sentence, Brown said.

I believe we need a mandatory sentencing for hate crimes. I suggest "not to exceed one year probation" and zero prison time.

The 37 y.o. man also “broke windows, lights, and security cameras by smashing them with a machete” during his vandalism.
Even then, the long prison sentence still seems too harsh.
This could have been resolved with a hefty fine and significant community service hours.

Note to wannabee criminals: ALWAYS assume you are on camera when committing a crime. If you are not wearing a disguise, you are going to be living in cramped government housing, probably with your own toilet in your room.
